I have 30 years of experience and own my own excavation company. We do general excavation work for all types of needs. Most of our work has been in Park City, and Salt lake area, specializing in high end homes. We also do digging basements, over X , running utilities, final grading, concrete prep, any kind of retaining wall, hauling dirt or gravel and any type of aggregate. Our equipment entails a 50k lbs excavator with hammer attachments and trenching and compaction attachments. A 12k lbs excavator with trenching, grading, and compaction attachments for the smaller jobs. A skid steer for grading or shaping of any kind. We have compaction equipment for the spots that need compaction. A 5 axle dump truck that can haul debris or boulders or any kind of aggregate needed for the job. Lastly, we have a semi truck with a lowboy trailer built to haul any kind of heavy equipment. We are interested in all kinds of job, and can accommodate all your excavation needs.

Excavating questions, answered by experts

The digging depth will depend on the size of the trencher you use. Even smaller units can dig up to 4 feet deep, which is plenty for a DIY job. However, much larger trenchers can reach a depth of 18 feet and are better used by a team of pro contractors, not a single DIYer. As with all home improvement projects, use the right tool for the job and proceed with caution.

Septic tanks are typically buried between four inches and four feet deep, depending on the property, the soil, and the size of the tank. When the septic tank is buried on the deeper end of this range, it may be harder for you to locate it on your own with a soil probe or just by observing the yard for signs of the tank. However, if you have trouble finding the septic tank, a pro will be happy to help you.

Trenching is not the same as boring. Boring uses a drill to make a tunnel for underground utilities, but trenching involves digging with an excavator, trencher, backhoe, or shovel. Boring is more precise and expensive, and it’s best for installing utilities underneath buildings, roads, and bodies of water. Trenching is simpler but can cause more disruption to landscaping and ecosystems.

It takes one hour to dig a 10-foot trench by hand. Use a trenching shovel with a sharp tip and a long head. Plan for more time if your soil is heavy or rocky. Consider renting a trencher if you’re digging a long or deep trench or if you have challenging soil or terrain.

Landscape edging is more DIYable than trenching. You can DIY your own digging projects, but proceed carefully and only with proper knowledge of the equipment and appropriate safety measures in place. Keep in mind the project's scope and estimate how long it will take you to do it on your own. While you can certainly save money by DIYing home improvement projects, you can’t exactly hide an unfinished—or worse, ruined— landscaping job from the neighbors. It’s always safer to call an excavation pro near you to get an estimate.
