"We had J&M refinish our redwood deck this summer after our disastrous decision to have 'opaque' stain (read paint) applied 4 years ago by another company. Billy's workers were thorough and diligent and pleasant. They did a great job and we look forward to using the deck often during the rest of this and many seasons, We are VERY pleased with the work and the price."

Small jobs welcome

"I called David Trail because my roof was leaking into the kitchen and more rain was on the way. He was the first contractor to show up. After walking the roof, he decided that the problem wasnâ t roofing, it was cracked caulking around the vents. I signed for the repair and his workers did enough to see me through for the next few days. The rain fell, but not in the kitchen. When he came back, I invited him to walk the property and bid on patching and repainting problem areas of the house and walls. The price sounded quite good: Had he seen all the cracks and loose plaster? But they didnâ t just patch and paint. They completely repainted everything. And depending on the work of the day, it was quite a crew. As many as seven energetic, highly skilled young men who, I discovered, were all members of his family. They always worked until sundown, sometimes later. On the last day, they came back after dark to finish the clean-up. In the end, the work was excellent, as was the total price. So I do recommend that you have him out to look over your problem areas. As for me, I have no more problem areas. Itâ s all perfect."

"Overall, the final result was an excellent paint job that we are very happy with. Along the way, we had some difficulties. Painter 1 is a franchise that subcontracts with independent painters to do the work. Unfortunately, the painters contracted to do our job were less than adequate. Fortunately, Painter 1 stood by their guarantee and made sure the work was done right. They even went above and beyond. So while initially, we were not happy with the work, they were very professional, listened to our complaints and concerns, and took care of correcting the issue in a very timely manner."

"Paint project was completed as scheduled and at a reasonable price. The paint quality is outstanding, building surface prep was great, (no paint on the brick work or any other areas), and the paint application to surfaces was really well done. I would hire them again for another future project."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

Yes, you must thoroughly clean your deck before staining. If you don't, dirt, debris, grease, and mildew can get trapped between the wood and the new stain. This not only looks unsightly but also prevents the stain from penetrating the wood properly, reducing its ability to protect the deck from weather and UV rays. As a result, the stain won't last as long or look as good. Any existing mold or mildew left untreated can continue to grow beneath the new stain, potentially leading to wood rot and structural damage. Always wait at least 48 hours after cleaning for the wood to dry completely before applying stain.

Ensure gutters and downspouts remain clean, monitor wall integrity, and promptly address any arising imperfections or peels concept permanence rooted.

Ideally, it's best to stain your dock once per year. Applying stain doesn't just keep it looking nice and new; it also helps extend the dock’s lifespan. Since you want to ensure water levels are at their lowest, it's best to have this project done by a professional dock repair service in the cooler autumn or early winter months.

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood, as this helps prevent the surface from cracking. However, it is crucial to wait for the wood to dry out completely from the chemical treatment process before applying a finish. If the wood is still wet, the paint will not adhere properly. The drying time can range from weeks to six months. To test if the wood is ready, drip some water onto a board. If the water is absorbed, the wood is dry enough for painting or staining. If the water beads up on the surface, it needs more time to dry. You can build with the wood while it's still wet, but you must wait for it to dry before painting.
