If your bathtub is in overall good shape with minor scratches, discoloration, or just general wear and tear, it's best (and less expensive) to refinish it. 

If your tub has large cracks, is leaking, or is otherwise severely damaged, we recommend replacing it with a new bathtub. Refinishing a bathtub can only fix superficial problems, so these issues will still be present or reappear after a refinishing.

Surprisingly, cleaning an air bath is almost as easy as relaxing in one. Most air baths have a self-cleaning or drying cycle to remove moisture from the inner tubing. This prevents mold and keeps the tub ready for your next soaking session. For deeper cleaning, use mild soap and a soft cloth to wipe the surfaces and periodically clean the air jets as the manufacturer recommends.

Rust in your bathtub occurs when iron in the water or on metal components in your tub are exposed to oxygen, but while it’s unsightly, it won’t make bathing dangerous. However, if the rust appears under or around your tub spout or shower head, it could indicate that you have high levels of iron in your water. Refinishing a bathtub takes about two to four hours, but let the surface set for another 24 to 48 hours before using it again. Once it's set, your tub should last for 10 years or more. While tubs are fairly sturdy, you may notice cracks or holes. This kind of damage can happen from someone accidentally dropping something heavy into the tub. You might also see damage if you drop something heavy into the tub over and over again (like your extra large bottle of body wash). While you might only notice a small dent at first, this can later turn into a crack or a hole.

Also, certain cleaners that are harmful to your tub can cause damage. And if you have a fiberglass tub, you might see cracks if it was not installed properly with the right support.
