"Airlock came and did a home energy audit for us. Shawn, the Auditor, showed us exactly what he was looking for and what all the results meant for our home and energy efficiency. He interpreted the problems that we had with our home, such as some rooms are much more comfortable than others. The energy audit was very thorough and he provided a super in depth report of the results. He also provided a list of upgrades in order of their cost effectiveness and we decided on several. We decided on the Air Duct Sealing, which would help the hot and cold rooms and provide energy savings. We also decided on sealing can lights and adding attic insulation. They managed the whole project from start to finish and made sure everything was done properly. We really notice that our home is more comfortable now and we are thrilled with the savings on our energy bills."

"Performance Air with Brent is the only choice when it comes to all your heating and AC needs! He is honest, fair and just a great person to do business with. When the old AC finally dies, I will be using Performance Air! Just now, he upgraded my thermostat that wasn't allowing me to turn up the heat!"

"Over 10 years ago, JL converted my home from an ineffective "cooler" system to air conditioning, and I have NEVER had any problems in all these years (except having to remember to replace the filters!)!! His perfectionism and work ethic is is simply THE BEST I have experienced from any service professional. He "does it right the first time!"--something very rare in these times of so many who take advantage of the ignorance of homeowners who contract those in service industries. He completed the work in very good time, was very easy to work with, and was more than reasonable in cost (I don't remember the actual cost, but do remember being very pleased, especially considering the careful workmanship)."

"Wow! My family was able to get a 97.5% efficient furnace installed by the owner of the company. Great service, great price, and very professional. Did a great job at keeping the work area clean and went above and beyond by fixing a few other small items without being asked and at no additional cost. He explained the difference between the old furnace and the new one and told us what to expect from the new one. Very pleased with the professionalism that was portrayed."

"This company did all electrical in our newly built custom home, including installation of central vac. We couldn't be happier with the responsiveness we received. Our city wasn't easy to work with, but he did a great job of communicating with city inspectors to get through inspections timely. We subsequently hired them to retrofit a commercial building/storage facility for all electrical after leasing it. Again, great work and very responsive. Pricing has always been competitive and estimates were consistent with actual price paid. We would and do recommend them to anyone and we would use them again. - Doug Nielsen"

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

Home power is measured in kilowatt-hours, commonly expressed as kWh. The average home uses between 800 and 1,000 kWh per month. Peak usage (and highest bills) occurs in the middle of summer and the depths of winter. Keeping on top of your usage during these crucial months will lower your annual average usage considerably.

If you have central air conditioning, it’s fine to run your AC all day if that’s what you want—as long as the AC unit is in good condition. But if your AC runs constantly when you don’t want it to, there may be a problem with your system (like the ones we’ve mentioned above). Window AC units and wall air conditioners aren’t as powerful as central AC, so you should only run those kinds of air conditioners for eight to 12 hours at a time.

Upgrade to double-glazed glass or apply energy-efficient coatings to reduce heat loss and utility costs.

The extra insulation helps reduce energy costs by minimizing drafts and temperature exchange between indoors and outdoors.
