"I needed a multi-skilled handyman to get my bathroom back in working order after a mold remediation. Joseph called me a week before the project to ask for details, gave me a list of supplies to get, and communicated with me on every step of the project. Not only did he complete the project in 3 days (2 days under my expected timeline), he also completed it $900 UNDER the quoted price. Hes honest, hard working, and fair. Joseph & Cranston will be my go-to handyman service from here on out! (attached: Before & after pics of bathroom)"

"Parker is simply the best. Professional, easy to be around, definitely knows his stuff. I had a problem with my dryer not drying properly and he took it all apart until he felt he found the problem. He stopped and showed me things along the way so that I knew what he was doing. Very reasonably priced. Will definitely use again as he is available to do other things besides dryer repair. Highly recommend."

"They were on time and keep you posted on the progress of the project. Their work was excellent. We are very pleased with how our back patio look. Out of the 3 pros that we met with for our porject, they were the only one that came prepared showing us the different finishes that we could choose from and their price was the lowest of the 3 bids. We will definitely use them again if we want to coat our walkway and front porch later down the road."

Closets questions, answered by experts

You can design your own closet, but it’s usually better to hire a professional to do the work for you. Not only will you get years of design experience to guide you toward the right layout and material choices, but you’ll also only pay slightly more hiring a professional than you would creating your own plans and hiring a carpenter. A high-quality closet designer can provide insight into how to lay out your closet, and they may be able to find you a good deal on the carpentry or complete the work using an affordable, in-house team.

Some features and upgrades you can add (some of which increase the closet’s value) are: modular shelving, motion-activated lighting, climate control, custom lighting, cigar humidors, revolving shoe racks, jewelry shelves, custom woodwork, and built-in laundry hampers. While only truly luxury closets have all of these, many custom closets have at least one special feature listed above.

Whether it’s less expensive to build or buy a closet depends on both the type of closet and whether or not you’d be constructing it yourself. The cost of custom closets built by a pro ranges from $1,300 to $3,800, but you may be able to DIY it for as little as $400. By contrast, prefabricated options go as low as $200 and up to $3,000, so it’s almost always less expensive to go this route.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

You can modernize an old-looking closet by just painting it, but beyond that, consider electric elements like recessed or accent lighting. If this is a large and deep closet, you can consider adding an island to the middle or a nice ottoman on a rug. Luxury closets will have even more items, like felt-lined drawers for watches and jewelry, in-wall safes, electronic shoe storage, or a tablet catalog of their items.
