"They came out and gave me an estimate for lawn service plus winterizing with organic/natural weed and feed which was explained to me to be safer for children and pets. We agreed on the service that I wanted and the price (which I consider reasonable) and the lawn was cut and edged and the weed and feed was put down while I was at work the next day. So far so good. Can't really comment on the results using the week and feed, but the grass look so much better now and an excellent job was done on edging. I will probably use this company again. The man who came out to give me an estimate was new to Excellent Lawn Service, but seemed to really know about grass, sod and the care needed to get it looking good."

Weed Services questions, answered by experts

Water the lawn thoroughly, apply fertilizer, and overseed if necessary to promote healthy growth.

Like sugar, the common household staple baking soda has uses in the yard. Baking soda boosts your plants to resist pests, fungal growth, and more. So, baking soda is good for your plants in certain instances, but exercise caution, as using too much could kill your plants. It’s great for hunting for pesky weeds, but not great for tending to a sensitive garden.

Look for a broadleaf herbicide, one that has been formulated specifically for dandelions and is considered grass-safe.

A spot herbicide for weed control is effective at killing crabgrass and not grass, but it depends on the type of herbicide. Always check the label to ensure that your herbicide is safe for grass but tough on crabgrass. Overall, spot treatment is ideal because it puts fewer herbicides into the soil, which can damage the soil. If you’re wanting a natural remedy to crabgrass that also won’t harm surrounding grass, you can also hand-remove crabgrass or even pour boiling water or 5% vinegar over crabgrass as a spot treatment.

If you have a lot of tree roots in your yard or have experienced issues in the past, you should use tree root killer every six months to prevent roots from infiltrating your pipes. If you have an active invasion and aren’t seeing results, check the instructions on the bottle to see how often you can use it in a short period of mine.
