"hard workers, polite, respectful of property, and reasonably priced for work that needed to be done. They climbed and cut down a large forked tree next to house. "it's a bit pricey, but if my trees are saved it'll be worth every penny. Dr. Bob was incredibly nice and he knows his stuff. After 45 years in the business I would hope he does. Another plus? Light-bark trees are most notorious for producing lots of sap when wounded. These varieties include maples, birches, poplars, dogwoods, magnolias, and elms, and they will bleed more when the trees are dormant. That’s why it’s a good idea to prune them in the summer months rather than waiting until winter.

You need to remove all branches affected by Dutch elm disease. If your tree has several affected branches, you will probably need to remove the entire tree. First, consult a pro to be sure that you’ve correctly identified it as an elm tree. Make sure the tree is properly disposed of with a plastic covering or through debarking, chipping, or burning.

It’s not as common for Dutch elm disease to affect other types of trees, especially if the surrounding trees aren’t elms. However, it is possible for DED to spread to other trees, particularly in northern states, like Minnesota. In fact, it’s a good idea to use geography to identify wood and determine which types of trees are in your yard. 

Unfortunately, the complex and shallow root system of elm trees makes surrounding elm trees particularly vulnerable to DED. Early discovery is key!

A general rule is that trees need 10 gallons of water for each inch of the tree’s diameter. For large trees, that can amount to approximately 160 gallons of water or more. Watering big trees to this extent can take quite a bit of time using a hose. For this reason, you may consider installing a soaker hose or sprinkler system to make the job easier.  

Rock salt or Epsom salt can damage and kill tree roots over several weeks and can even assist in removing the tree's stump. However, you need to drill holes or cut into the stump and surface tree roots to inject them properly with the salt. Repeat the process every two weeks until the roots visibly rot away.
