Customers say: True professional

"I contacted 4 companies to inspect my foundation and quote any recommended repairs. The quotes ranged from 6 to 16 piers, and $4K to $14K. While there were some similarities, there was a LOT of discrepancy between the work needed, what was included or extra, etc. I decided to obtain my own Structural Engineering report, and HIGHLY recommend CROSSTOWN ENGINEERING. Crosstown is completely independent and unbiased; they donâ t repair foundations and were not trying to sell me anything. They are professional, friendly and found an opening the next day. The engineer simply evaluated the property and provided a detailed report stating, â the foundation is performing as intended and we do not recommend foundation repairs at this time.â Best $400 Iâ ve ever spent! I have confidence in their findings, and I saved a LOT of money! If I have any concerns in the future, Crosstown will be my FIRST call!"

"Mr. Green offered me a very practical and professional report of the damage to my brick wall and what was causing the brick to separate from the wall. He gives very personal service to the areas of need and I found him to be very professional and personable in his business dealings. I will certainly contact him again if I need any structural advice on my home."

Customers say: Super punctual

"We started working with Mr. O'Brien a few weeks backs for our first custom home building project. Working with the Mr. O'Brien is an absolute pleasure for so many reasons: His experience is unparalleled, he has an abundance of patience, he is highly professional and quickly developed a shared vision for the project with us. He listened to our ideas and worked on them develop a coherent design for the house to the vision we had in mind. We went through a few versions but Mr. O'Brien worked very efficiently through the process and in turning the drafts around. We were given personal attention and value the input and experience that has helped shape our end product. Thank you for all that you have done for us. You were the Big Starting block ")."

"The best engineering company I’ve ever worked with, without question. They have completed both civil and structural design services for me on several projects, and every single one has been handled with a high level of professionalism, attention to detail, and technical expertise. Their team brings a tremendous amount of real world experience to the table and it shows in the quality of their work and the practicality of their solutions. They are responsive, easy to work with, and always willing to take the time to explain things clearly and work through challenges as they come up. "We have used Simonson Design as we went through an earlier design phase several years ago on our yet-to-be built new home, which we put on the back burner for several years. Presently, with a new design approach, we have "reset" the project back to the start and are excited to have the Simonson Design team once again by our side as our dream home design and plans come to fruition. We regularly recommend Simonson Design to others that are about to build but don't know where to start."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

By careful planning and reinforcement to maintain structural integrity.

Most structural engineers offer free quotes, regardless of the size of the job. For simple inspections when buying or selling a home, engineers typically charge a flat fee that may be based solely on your home’s foundation type and square footage. For larger projects, like new construction and major home renovations, an engineer will either perform an analysis of your project and site and provide you with a formal estimate, or they will do a more in-depth assessment and in-person site inspection before coming up with a per-hour or per-project cost estimate. In most cases, the estimate is free.

All foundations have footers, including monolithic slabs. In some cases, the foundation itself acts as the footer, as in the case of a floating slab and a monolithic slab. With a monolithic slab, the footers—which are just the bottom-most portion of the foundation that distributes loads down to stable soil—are a part of the main slab and are constructed with a single pour.

The 10 10 rule describes the formula most contractors use to determine how much to charge for a job. Allowing for 10% overhead above the total projected cost to do the work and 10% profit sets a contractor up for success, even if there are delays or other problems on the project. This formula isn’t a hard-and-fast rule, but it is a ballpark figure to begin with when estimating your expenses on a job.

A freestanding brick wall that's only one brick thick can usually stand six to eight feet high. If you need a higher wall, it should be at least two bricks thick for adequate stability, and it might require a footing to support the added weight. Additionally, some areas have regulations and codes dictating how high a brick wall can be, so check with local code enforcers to ensure your proposed wall complies with any regulations.
