"Ernest and Allan did Excellent work repairing part of a wall and ceiling in my garage that had water damage. Ernest even helped me re-hang some heavy shelves that had to be taken off the wall. This is a top notch company. Highly Recommended!"

"Great! JTB Painting easily won our job on the basis of price and his reviews on Angie's List. He prepped and painted all exterior wood surfaces and trim on our house in Irving, TX. We found Jeff to be as good or better than his reviews. He gave us a great price, did excellent work prepping and painting our house, and completed the work with the time he said it would take. It was very hot outside, but he worked through the heat of the day to get the job done. My next-door neighbor was so impressed with the work Jeff did on my house, he hired JTB to do his house, too! Jeff is honest, hard-working, soft-spoken, does great work, and is as good as his word."

"CertaPro came, answered all our questions, and gave us an accurate estimate. We had told them that we would buy the paint, but it turned out that they could get the same paint cheaper (Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint), so we had them buy it. They weren't the cheapest bid we got, but they were affordable enough that we had them paint our deck, too. Very high quality work! Great communication throughout."

"Oscar and his helper were great. They cleaned up as much as possible every day and thoroughly at the end of the project. We had the popcorn removed from three living areas as well as painting. Totally happy with the workmanship. We highly recommend Oscar and his company."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

There are more pros than cons when staining a deck. Deck stain is more affordable than paint, it protects the wood and allows the natural textures to shine through, and it can revive the appearance of your home. However, deck stain also requires prep work (sometimes days or more), carries more upkeep than a painted deck, and can fade over time if not cared for.

To make sure the paint won’t bubble as you apply it, make sure to paint on a day that’s cooler than 85 degrees Fahrenheit. When the temperature is too high, the paint won’t dry evenly, which can result in bubbles forming on the surface. Another way to prevent paint from bubbling is to clean the walls, apply primer, and let everything dry completely before you begin.

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.

It is not always necessary to remove old stain before restaining a deck. If the previous stain is in good condition and is compatible with the new stain, you may be able to apply a new coat after thorough cleaning. However, if the old stain is in bad condition, flaking, or peeling, it is best to remove it completely to ensure an even surface and proper adhesion for the new coat. Staining over a damaged layer can lead to an uneven finish and poor penetration. For best results, test a small area first and consult the stain manufacturer's guidelines.

DIY staining or painting is manageable with proper preparation, including safety measures, necessary tools, and adherence to safe weather conditions for application.
