The best paint for an older deck depends on the material and whether or not your deck already has a coat of paint. Generally, if your deck already has paint on it, you should choose the same type of paint when repainting the deck. Wood stain is usually dry to the touch within 6 to 8 hours, but you should let each coat sit for 24 hours before applying another coat or applying a protective coat over it. If you applied your stain in high humidity or cold temperatures, you may need to wait up to 48 hours for the stain to dry completely.

Sealing a deck is better than staining in terms of protection. Stain on its own does nothing but change the color of wood, while sealing protects wood from moisture, insects, and UV damage. If you want to stain your wood, consider a stain-and-sealant-in-one to change your deck's appearance while protecting it from the elements. Reapply stain and sealant once every year or two.

While it’s best to avoid exterior painting when it’s raining, you can still paint inside when the weather is wet. As long as the humidity and temperature inside your house are moderate enough to allow paint to dry properly and your room is properly ventilated, it’s perfectly fine to tackle an indoor painting project even if it’s raining cats and dogs outside.

The general consensus is that two coats of stain are required and since the cedar is siding, a third coat of sealant is always a good idea. This helps protect the wood and stain, so you won’t need to resand and restain for at least a decade. Each stain after the first will darken the wood, so be aware of that when choosing a colored stain.
