Mike Thorton grew up in Oregon working in forestry while in high school, and came to attend Abilene Christian University as a pole-vaulter. He earned a degree in Education, specializing in Physical Education. I taught school for ten years while doing landscape maintenance in the evenings. I have now been in the tree business for 24 years. We have 4 skilled trimmers that can handle any job. Each trimmer has their ground hands that cleans up and chips. Planting trees far enough from your foundation will protect your home from root damage, but if you’re dealing with existing trees, you can still guard against roots. Root barriers form a physical boundary that will prevent roots from encroaching on your foundation and can help save you from expensive foundation repair costs.

A serrated knife will work for cutting off small palm tree fronds, about 1 inch in diameter. For larger fronds, you will need pruning shears. You may also use a pruning saw, and if your palm tree is especially tall, an extended pole saw can help you reach the brown fronds around the trunk.

Since overwatering can harm mature trees just as much as a lack of water, it’s important to know the signs of an overwatered tree. If your tree’s leaves are yellowing, wilting, or dropping leaves, it’s likely that you’re overwatering. Other common signs include rotting, fungi, soggy soil, soft or peeling bark, falling leaves, and brittle roots. 

If you realize that you’ve been overwatering your mature tree, stop watering and give the soil time to dry out. Then moving forward, increase time between watering sessions. 

Trimming a tree can take anywhere from just two hours to a full day, depending on the age of the tree, the number of trees, and the species. Young trees are generally easier to trim, as their branches are often thinner in diameter and easier to reach compared to mature trees. They also tend to be healthier. If you haven’t trimmed your trees before or it’s been a while, the process could take even longer.

If you aren’t sure what you’re doing, be very careful when cutting mature tree roots (roots larger than 2 inches). Root cutting and pruning can affect both a tree’s stability and its ability to nourish itself. Issues during root cutting can result in damage or injury. 

It’s recommended you call in a pro to help, unless it’s a very small tree and you aren’t worried about the prospect of losing the tree.
