"DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY. We have moved and this company is telling us we HAVE to upgrade our plan to get service at the new house and we HAVE to pay the remaining 15 months on our contract at the old house. Also, we found out our alarm had not been properly monitored for a long period of time due to a technical error. Kandace Taffee is the absolute worst. She transferred me to the contracts department and to her manager, Patrick. We have gotten conflicting information from all the different departments we spoke with. Sadly we paid off the remaining 15 months on our contract. Happily we have gone with a different company to monitor our alarm. We chose a company where we did not have to sign a contract."

Home Security Systems questions, answered by experts

Yes, driveway gates can help secure your home by deterring burglars from accessing your property. Climbing a gate slows down burglars while also attracting attention to your gate. If you live further down your property and want to increase security, you can also install a gate security camera that connects to your gate and monitors the area for suspicious activity.

Some but not all security cameras have monthly fees, depending on the specific camera system and the services offered with it, especially monitored vs. unmonitored security systems. Home security companies that offer monitoring services along with cameras will charge a monthly fee for monitoring and possibly for using the security cameras. Cameras that you monitor yourself as part of your own security system will not have monthly fees charged.

Yes, it's possible for hackers to access wireless security cameras by guessing or stealing passwords. Additionally, your camera's cloud content can also be hacked. Finally, some criminals use Wi-Fi signal jammers to disable wireless cameras.

The biggest downside to a wireless security camera is that it's 100% reliant on Wi-Fi to capture footage at your home. Even when Wi-Fi is reliable, the range for wireless cameras may only be 200 feet or less. Drywall, brick, and other materials in your home can be enough to make your signal lag.

Changing the alarm in your wireless security system is a perfectly reasonable DIY task that most people can complete on their own. Simply open the system’s control panel, remove the existing battery, and replace it with a new one. If you’re using a wired system, this may require disconnecting and reconnecting both the positive and negative wires attached to the battery, and you may want to call in a professional to help.
