I was, at first, less than impressed with Terra. The A/C unit they had quoted in the estimate was "unavailable" for at least a month. Terra tried to sell me a brand of A/C I'd never heard of at the same price as the Rudd they'd quoted me. I informed them that this was a bait and switch and I wouldn't put up with it. Terra came back with a proposal for a slightly larger Rudd brand unit that they had on hand for a greater cost. I agreed and work started within the week on installation. Terra got both units totally installed and working in only two days. This pleased me. Two workmen were present, both spoke English, but one spoke it much more fluently than the other. I was asked for input several times, which made me very happy as I was able to get one of the fan coils rotated so that pipes wouldn't be in a walkway. I was not at all pleased that the new, larger, Rudd fan coil unit did not fit on the preexisting cement pad. Terra offered no help in pouring or adjusting the cement pad. In fact, the installer was perfectly willing to let it dangle in space by four inches. When I said that was unacceptable we both went looking for a base. We found a cement block which the technician jammed under the edge of the unit. The unit was now uneven by over an inch. The technician was fine with this, which was SERIOUSLY unprofessional. I may not know much about A/C units, but I strongly suspect they ought to be level. I finally (temporarily) solved the problem by using scrap wood to brace up the side to the correct height. Terra said that when I get around to expanding the cement base they'd lift the unit, not move it so I can re-pour the entire base, mind, but lift it temporarily. Also, one of the technicians built an air return over a hole in the drywall. No patching, no coming to get me so that I could patch it myself, he just built the return. He didn't seem to see any problem with air rushing into the inside of the walls. He said, "You were supposed to handle dry wall." Yeah. Very typical craftsmanship for South Texas. This is why I am not rating them higher. They did what they said they would do and not a single bit more. In conclusion, I would recommend them, but only if you are willing to stand there and WATCH them work. They cannot be trusted to do a quality job unsupervised. However, if you are physically present and know what the work OUGHT to look like so you can correct mistakes, Terra is a good company. These guys are super squared away. My job required masonry work, framing, carpentry, drywall and A/C unit installation. Each crew was polite, informative, and very skilled at what they did. The crew that did the actual A/C unit install went as far as inspecting the new units I had purchased online for damage from shipping. To me this is above and beyond and is indicative of folks who really care. The same crew actually READ the A/C unit installation directions and FOLLOWED them to a and quot;Tand quot;. Let me begin this next paragraph and talk about the after work clean up. It was as if they were never there. I even joked with the crew about their prep work, stating it looked like a clean room you'd see in the computer or hospital industry. No kidding folks it was as if they were never there.
In closing, the estimator was on time, polite and very knowledgable. If something changed the estimate, he explained it and put it all in writing. Father and Son isn't going to be your cheapest estimate, but folks, you get what you pay for, and they stand behind it.........and I even got a Christmas card! This contractor was brought in to finish the restoration project begun in September 2008 by another shoddy contractor, Disaster America, located in Houston, Tx. (these guys are storm/insurance proceed chasers). 5 Star Builders was subsequently brought in to finish the project approximately mid April 2009. The craftsmanship is so sub par, as to lead one to believe that we actually do live about twenty miles south in Mexico!! The use of subcontractors and personnel who are not qualified to construct a teepee let alone homes. these items include; electrical, drywall, plumbing, tape and float and sand DW compound, painting/staining. The vast majority of the workers are definitely, (by their own admission) undocumented (PC way of saying illegals) workers. An example of substandard work would be; while replacing the drywall from the floor slab up 4'. they 1.) used the wrong size drywall, 2.) the taping floating and sanding of the drywall has gone from the normal 3-5\" width to approximately 18\" wide now, and it was textured prior to painting, however all the taping is still readily visible, despite texturing!! They are currently in their fourth attempt to fix this situation) The plumbers did not provide shutoff valves in the various water lines they installed, moved hotwater heaters in to positions that hinder the opening of doors, tried to place interior plastic piping, visibly tacked onto the buildings exterior siding, to replace the flow to the outside hose faucet which they had previously cut off from the main when they were redoing some of the interior water piping. Even though this was repeatedly brought to their attention prior to the drywall being put back up, (this was not, and to date has not been corrected) thus the need for their creative outdoor solution. The various contractors put multiple scratches in the new formica counter tops by carelessly throwing used parts and tools on top of it, with no protection for the exposed surfaces. Took out good, working electrical fixtures and replaced with the cheapest materials possible. Covered over electrical/cable outlets. also, incorrectly wired many of the fixtures. Paint and stain dropplets and smears are everywhere, including, floor, walls, trim, cabinets, doors. Lack of using dropclothes, proper prep taping, and immediate clean up of spilled paint/stain has resulted in spots and smears everywhere. (oh, I better not forget the window blind which came up missing after the painter was done, which he tried to tell me that he had not moved, however all the screwholes from the fixture mounts were painted over). They replaced a sliding window but never chaulked the inside. Chipped a brand new faux marble bathroom countertop, and didn't say a word about it. never removed, or covered over some light fixtures prior to painting. So there is both paint/stain on the glass fixture but it is obvious that they never painted the visible wall behind the fixture either. Worst of all, the contractor does not return phone calls, repeatedly is out of town leaving no one in charge to keep the work going. Better yet, they'll tell you they will be back the next day, and then they do not return for days to weeks at a time. A project that should have taken approximately 4-5 months from start to finish, is now at fifteen months and counting. (I am basing this on my twenty some years in the commercial construction and building trades as both a skilled tradesman [journeyman/mechanics] worker and contractor, as well as my civil engineering degree, with construction as my specialty). I could go on with numerous other blatant examples of but this grows very tiresome and I have many more important things to do ....... on a scale of 1 - 10 (10 being the best) this contractor would get about a 2 - 2 1/2 maximum score at best."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/tx/port-isabel/five-star-builders-reviews-2285834.htm"},"position":5},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"ADT Security Services, Inc","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"TX","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"THOMAS R."},"reviewBody":"BRINKS WAS ONE OF FIVE COMPANIES I RECEIVED ESTIMATES FROM FOR AN ALL-NEW ALARM SYSTEM IN MY NEW CONDO. I WAS INTERESTED ENOUGH IN THEIR PROPOSAL TO SIGN A CONTRACT (KNOWING THAT I HAD THREE BUSINESS DAYS TO RESCIND UNDER ILLINOIS LAW), BUT DISCOVERED AT THE END OF THE VISIT THAT THE ESTIMATE WAS FOR A FULLY WIRED SYSTEM. I WANTED A WIRELESS SYSTEM BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT TO RISK DAMAGE TO NEW CONDO DURING THE INSTALLATION OF WIRES BELOW THE BASEBOARDS OR THROUGH THE DRYWALL. ONCE I LEARNED THAT THE ESTIMATE WAS FOR A WIRED SYSTEM, I ASKED THE SALESMAN WHAT A CRYPTIC REFERENCE TO $50 ON THE CONTRACT MEANT. HE EXPLAINED THAT EACH SENSOR THAT COULDN'T BE INSTALLED WITH WIRES AND INSTEAD HAD TO BE WIRELESS WOULD COST ME ANOTHER $50. Drywall questions, answered by experts
A 50-pound mirror can be hung on drywall, but only if it has the support of strong hardware. Ideally, you can find the studs behind the drywall and attach the mirror to them; this will give your mirror better stability. Otherwise, confirm that you are using anchors appropriate to the weight of the mirrors. Another technique is to use French cleats—two pieces of wood that fit together, with one piece attached to the wall and the other to the mirror. This allows the weight to be distributed over a wider area.
It's generally recommended to hang drywall on the ceiling first before moving on to the walls. This sequence allows the ceiling sheets to provide support for the vertical wall sheets. By attaching the ceiling drywall initially, you establish a solid framework to align and attach the wall panels accurately. This method ensures a seamless and sturdy connection between the ceiling and walls, resulting in a more professional finish.
If you don’t have studs in the area where you want to install your TV mount, you may still be able to install a TV mount on drywall. The easiest way to install a mount on drywall is by using drywall anchors—but not just any plastic anchors. Choose molly bolts or toggle anchors, which have a weight capacity of around 50 pounds. For added support, consider pairing drywall anchors with a wall mounting plate. Extra heavy TVs may need to be mounted via the ceiling joists or beams.
Yes, professionals often repair minor wall openings made for insulation injection to restore the surface.
Yes, wainscoting is installed directly over drywall. However, ensure the drywall is in good shape since it will support the wainscoting. If the drywall has issues, such as holes, mold, or mildew, repair them before installing the wainscoting. Alternatively, you can install a plywood substrate before attaching the trim.
