"Thomas and Dustin’s Asphalt is a great company to work with. They are honest, fair, reliable and do great work. Thomas showed up promptly to give a bid and was timely in responding to my calls and messages throughout the process. The bid was fair and we ended up having the original driveway and two deteriorating overlays replaced with a new driveway for less than two other companies bid to do yet another overlay. We had to delay the start of the job for a few weeks for personal reasons, but when we were ready to schedule it Thomas was ready to get us on the schedule promptly at the exact time we needed. It was refreshing to work with Thomas and Dustin who were always on site working alongside and supervising the rest of the crew. This family business proves why they’ve been around for so long and get great reviews. The work was finished on time as promised and we are very satisfied. Whether you should resurface or replace your asphalt driveway heavily depends on its condition. If the foundation is solid and the damage is minor, resurfacing is your best bet because it’s more affordable and faster than replacing the driveway. But if your driveway has foundational problems and/or severe damage, like large, deep cracks and potholes, then it makes more sense to replace it. 

Your driveway contractor will probably recommend that you avoid driving on your new millings driveway for up to a week. Keeping pressure off the freshy applied millings will help the driveway to bind together. While the sun is helpful for binding millings, hotter weather can actually make the curing process take longer.

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.

Decomposed granite and caliche can both harden into a solid surface using a plate compactor. However, due to decomposed granite’s fine particles, it’s not suitable for driveway surfaces. Some homeowners use pea gravel mixed with a gravel-binding resin to bind the loose stones and create a solid surface that won’t shift like loose gravel.

The recommended minimum amount for a paver base is 4 inches. From there, it depends on the kind of traffic the pavers will see and the current soil conditions. Two inches of paver base won’t create the amount of stability and support that pavers need to remain securely in place over time.
