Customers say: True professional

"Sierra did an excellent job—efficient, high quality, and on budget. The house had 40 years’ worth of deferred maintenance:electrical, plumbing, painting, finishes (stone and wood) and HVAC in a remote location. Sierra’s crew was onsite for one month, working seven days a week. There were no delays because “we have another job,” or other typical GC reasons for delay. This job (spring 2026) was Sierra’s second for us. The quality, attention to detail, and customer service are incomparable. I know Scott Phillips to be a professional of the highest standards of workmanship, honesty, and integrity. Unqualified superlative endorsement."

"*UPDATE* I contacted Angie's List and told them this review was for the wrong company. They were supposed to cancel this review, but never happened. I apologize for the erroneous review of the wrong contractor."

"As with many other Angie's List deals - the price of the deal OFTEN ends up in the company charging more. Once you have paid for the deal, they come out, and then they charge more. For this job, he couldn't find the siding that matched, left it unpainted, left it without spray foam (not sure why any contractor comes out without basic things like spray foam) so I still have work to do on it and it's not a completed job. Not very satisfied with this level of service. I had sent pictures ahead of time so I also was charged for him having to go to some building store, not sure why that can't be done ahead of time?"

"Did a fantastic job on my cabinets. Went above and beyond and not only did the repair, but reinforced for optimal conditions in the future. Definitely a must hire if you have any cabinet concerns. Additionally, pivoted mid job once identified that the builder used particle board instead of real wood. Would recommend them 100 times over!"

"I had the pleasure of working with Alex and his team at Catalyst Construction for a major renovation project, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results! They installed brand-new windows throughout my entire house, which required reframing, drywall work, and painting, and they handled everything with incredible skill and professionalism. Additionally, they upgraded my lighting with recessed fixtures, completely transforming my living space. From start to finish, Alex and his team demonstrated exceptional professionalism. Their communication was top-notch; they kept me informed every step of the way, answering all my questions promptly and clearly. It really put my mind at ease knowing I was in good hands. In terms of timing, they adhered to the agreed-upon schedule, completing the work efficiently without compromising on quality. Every aspect of the job was executed with precision and care, making a noticeable difference in both the aesthetics and energy efficiency of my home. I highly recommend Alex and his team at Catalyst Construction to anyone looking for reliable and skilled contractors. They exceeded my expectations and truly delivered on their promises. Thank you, Alex and team, for a job well done!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

While some highly experienced homeowners can frame a house independently, it is not advisable. You will need ample carpentry experience, a team of helpers, and professionals to sign off on your work to meet local building codes. For the safest outcome, we recommend buying or building a house with the guidance of professionals.

Costs depend on desk size, labor, included features like drawers or motorized height adjustments, and required wall anchoring.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

House framing can be expensive because the materials are pricey, and the job requires a high level of expertise. The more complex the plans, the more expensive the job, but even the most basic frame needs to be installed with high-quality materials and precision. When pricing your home’s framework, remember that a sturdy frame is necessary to create a safe structure.

Most load-bearing walls are exterior, though they can also be interior.
