"Michael and his crew were awesome! They were very thorough when quoting the job (critical for me, since I was hiring them to install insulation over my own failed insulation attempt) and did an excellent job with their install. They did the work quickly and were very easy to work with. Michael is a fantastic communicator, which was very important since we had a bit of question/answer to determine if my failed insulation would be ok to spray new insulation over. I was confident they would do a great job and they did not disappoint. I would definitely recommend them to anyone and would hire them again."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

The primary downside of radiant barriers is their limited effectiveness in cold climates. They are designed to reflect radiant heat, making them less beneficial in cooler conditions where heat retention is more important.

Radiant barriers require proper installation to maximize effectiveness. Incorrect placement can lead to minimal benefits. They also do not provide insulation, meaning they should be used in conjunction with traditional insulation for optimal energy efficiency.

Rockwool insulation can last up to 100 years, but just how long this insulation lasts in your home depends on how well it's maintained. Poorly installed insulation may last only 30 years, so be sure to regularly inspect your home's insulation for water damage, settling, and pests to give your insulation the best chance of having a long lifespan.

Yes, usually you will need some kind of vapor barrier on the exterior walls when the framing is attached to concrete and masonry surfaces.

Ideally, you can add new insulation to your existing insulation. However, some circumstances require you to remove old insulation before adding any new insulation:

  • If the insulation is over 15 years old

  • If the insulation is wet or moldy

  • If it is vermiculite insulation

  • If you see signs of pest infestation

Removing old insulation is best left to a pro who can safely dispose of potential moldy or asbestos-ridden insulation.

One of the disadvantages of soffit vents is they can bleed warm air from the attic during winter, resulting in slightly higher energy bills and a colder house. There are ways to mitigate this effect—mostly just closing the vent in the fall. What’s most important is your attic is ventilated to some degree in the winter.
