"Last October, my sister, an elderly veteran living alone, contracted Genie Bath Systems to remodel her master and guest baths. She was diagnosed cancer and passed before the remodel was complete. Which, to be fair as we were not able to work with Genie while attending to my sister. The contract was expensive. Very expensive. The cost of the remodel is close to 1/4th the value of her home. I noticed there were issues with the remodel that showed a surprising lack of attention to detail. Genie sent people to address the issues twice. Yet issues remain. My calls to my contact at Genie are now being ignored. Also, the only document I have for the remodel is the contract my sister signed. It is not detailed. I have and continue to ask for a breakdown of the cost. An estimate or work order. This request is also being ignored. I am disappointed and have to wonder why Genie will not provide this information. I have several other questions for Genie that I will not go into here. But based on my experience, I cannot recommend Genie. In fact I would warn anyone considering Genie to be very careful about the cost of the contract."

When you hear significant clanking, popping, crackling, or banging in a radiator that’s turned off, you’ll want to bleed the pipes or call in an HVAC specialist to deal with the problem (and prevent it from happening in the future).

A heating expert will be able to clarify whether it's worth the cost of replacing your radiator based on the cost of repairs. Between parts and labor, you'll pay between $250 and $2,500 for a new radiator depending on the type of unit. If the long-term costs of fixing a radiator are higher than replacement, it's best to update your model.

In general, it’s a good idea to bleed air from your heaters at the start of every cold season, before you move your boiler system back into active mode. Early fall is a common time for this task. However, some heating systems don’t need much manual bleeding because of automatic bleed vents and other components.

Modern boilers average around 20 years of use before failing, with some hitting 25 to 30 years. Older boilers, however, can last up to 50 years because they are often made from ultra-durable cast iron. Newer models are made from steel alloy and related components, which are great for withstanding high pressure levels and hot temperatures but offer a slightly lower life span.

Although boilers can last 15 to 20 years when maintained properly, you may run into some common problems like oil burners and transformers malfunctioning; cracks in the heat exchanger; clogs in the heating oil pump, burner nozzles, or fuel pipes; loose wiring connections; and damaged valves. Many of these problems can be caught early on during annual maintenance services. You might also have an issue with your fuel source if you have a gas or oil boiler. Make sure your other gas appliances are working or that you have oil in your tank.
