"I recently hired Marvin Williamson, Creative Remodeling, to remodel the guest bath & install custom woodwork/fireplace in the main living space. Marvin is highly skilled & a pleasure to work with. He has intuitive solutions to problems & listened carefully to my design plans. The custom electric fireplace he built is EXACTLY what I envisioned. He stayed on budget & did not rush or cut corners. The total transformation of the spaces is amazing! Whether it’s custom woodwork, tile or drywall/paint, Marvin has the skills & the work ethic to produce beautiful results. I highly recommend Marvin!"

"Mr Camejo did a number of jobs for me on a small guest house: cabinet install and countertop installation, installation of sink, toilet and wall unit ac. The job was completed quickly and professionally and he fit me in to accommodate my schedule. Pricing was very fair and the crew cleaned up the worksite as they worked and it was completely clean at end of job. I would highly recommend."

"I couldnâ t be more pleased. I am â finallyâ enjoying my patio for the first time! Kent enlarged the patio with pavers and did an excellent job. Attention to detail is most appreciated since pride of workmanship is not often seen anymore. I would highly recommend Kent Charpentier."

"The team of Charles and Monroe who did the framing and the deck were pure professionals. Over 40 years of foundation work and it showed. They worked everyday through the Texas summer heat. The deck is beautiful and looks better than originally designed. As the project started they say small flaws in my vision and gave me their opinions and it payed off big time. Seriously give John and his team a big consideration when choosing a deck."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Homeowners insurance may cover damaged floor joists, depending on your policy. Insurance typically covers issues from storms, fires, or water damage from burst pipes. However, don't expect your insurance company to cover damage from wear and tear, poor maintenance, or termites.

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface countertops can be cut with standard woodworking tools like a circular saw or a jigsaw, but using the correct blade is crucial for the best results.

The recommended blade is a tungsten carbide-tipped blade, often called a solid-surface planer or triple chip grind blade. This type of blade is hard enough to cut through the material effectively. For a jigsaw, a fine-tooth down-cutting blade should be used.

It is important to note that a diamond blade is not necessary. Diamond blades are designed for harder materials like natural stone, concrete, or brick, and Corian is not a natural stone.

Using blades designed for wood is not recommended as they can cause microfractures that weaken the countertop's edges. While a tungsten carbide blade provides a much cleaner cut, the resulting edge will still be rough and must be sanded and smoothed to prevent microfractures from developing over time.

There are two ways you can cut trim for doorways: with a miter saw or a table saw. Mitered joints need a 45-degree angle. If you’re unfamiliar with a miter saw, you might want to consider buying extra trim pieces or choosing butted joints instead. One wrong cut, and you’ll need to power up the saw again with a new piece.

Butted joints—also called shaker style—don’t need a 45-degree angle. Instead, your side pieces attach perpendicularly to the header trim and only require a straight cut.

While you can perform many routine home maintenance jobs yourself, it’s often a good idea to bring pros in for certain tasks. HVAC maintenance, fireplace and chimney inspections, foundation repairs, and roof inspections and repairs should be handled by professionals who know what to look for and can safely perform repairs. You may also find it helpful to hire a local house cleaning service to help with deep cleaning.

Board and batten is a type of wainscotting that uses wider boards that are placed vertically, and it has a much more rustic aesthetic than wainscotting. Common wainscotting styles are raised-panel, flat-panel, and beadboard. Wainscotting is more intricate and will typically use more elegant, subtle trims compared to the more farmhouse-inspired boards of board and batten styles.
