Although many types of railing can be fairly easy to install, cable and rope railing systems are probably the easiest. All you need to do is string them through and secure them. Barring those choices, panel railings that are pre-cut to the required size can also be very simple to DIY.

Most building codes list a minimum width of 36 inches and a maximum height of 7¾ inches. However, for the most comfort and spaciousness, you’ll want to aim for a width of at least 48 inches and a height of 7 inches. Again, it’s always a good idea to base your numbers off steps that you already use comfortably.

There are several ways you can finish stairs. If you like the carpeted look, you may choose to install new carpeting for an update. This is often the easiest way to proceed since the stairs' condition and appearance won’t matter as much if the staircase is in good structural shape. 

The condition of the stairs under the carpet can dictate your next move. You can sand, stain, and apply a clear coat if the stairs are hardwood. You can also paint the stairs, try epoxy floor ideas, or install new hardwood treads if the stairs are made with plywood.

The International Building Code requires individual step risers in a residential staircase to measure between 4 and 7-3/4 inches and the maximum rise of a staircase not to exceed 12 feet between landings. Individual step treads can’t be less than 10 inches deep.

Always begin by researching your local building codes and, when in doubt, speak with a local staircase company for confirmation. If you're estimating your handrail measurements, find the length of the nosing line of your steps—the horizontal line that touches the top of the tread of your steps. Measure between 34 and 38 inches up the walls for placement. The length of the handrail will then run the length of your nosing line or beyond, depending on local codes.
