"My first experience with Curtis/Spartan Excavating during the vetting process was absolutely incredible. As soon as I submitted an inquiry through Home Advisor, within 3 minutes, Curtis called me right away to discuss our project. We needed a rather large residential project completed. The materials we needed are below. 70 loads of 11-yard trucks of dirt 30 tons of crusher run (gravel) 70' of 36" HDPE culvert pipes Just from the materials we needed, you can tell that this is a large residential project. Curtis was able to help us in it's entirety from beginning to end. He didn't take any breaks either!! The minute we were on the phone, he was able to explain in great detail of how he would complete the job. So we scheduled a time to meet with him. We had 2 companies come out before Spartan Excavating and let me tell you - Curtis/Spartan Excavating is the guy you want to hire. The 2 companies that we vetted prior did not want to help with measuring, estimating, or calculating. Spartan Excavating was the ONLY one that did this. He stayed out for about 1-2 hours at our site to help us figure out OUR plan. He even helped us figure out how to complete other projects that we have on our mind!! Curtis from Spartan Excavating will tell you if he does not know - he does not pretend to think he knows everything. He will tell you what jobs he is comfortable with to ensure that he can deliver quality. He definitely DID NOT let us down - he stands true to his beliefs on what he can deliver. He understands the business so well and will help you understand something if you're not familiar with it! There's no need to "babysit" Curtis/Spartan Excavating as your contractor because when he says he can do it - he means it. The level of quality in his work is absolutely incredible. We look to have him as our main contractor for all site related work! Thank you for delivering the work as described!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

As a general rule, the protected area should be about 1½ times as wide as the canopy of the tree’s leaves. This digging measurement can vary by tree species and the age of the tree. Of course, that can be a lot of fencing for larger trees, which is why our first step is about making difficult decisions on which trees to save.

To locate an underground downspout, you should start by identifying where the above ground gutter drains. Look for an entry point, such as a pipe or elbow leading into the ground. Follow the surface path for signs like depressions, landscaping disruptions, or wet areas after rain. You can use a metal detector or plumber’s snake to trace the pipe underground. For deeper pipes, a professional locator tool or camera inspection may be necessary. Visual markers or utility maps can also guide the search.

Excavation and grading are both generally necessary for designing your foundation, and leveling the ground where your foundation will go. These steps can also prepare the area by removing vegetation and anything else that could interfere with your home’s foundation.

Whether you grind or dig up and remove your tree stump depends on your landscaping goals. Using a stump grinder leaves the root system in place for it to decompose over time, whereas digging up the tree stump removes the roots and the stump. Overall, stump grinding is a far simpler process since you won’t need to deal with the roots. Stump removal will make your yard look like a demolition site, but you’ll have an easier time replanting in the same place as your former tree.

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.
