"Technician came out for inspection and stated I needed a new cap since the existing one was damaged (crushed) on my wood burning stove. Appointment was set out a week in advance between 8 & 11 am, I actually called them at 10:45 and they said be there around 2pm. We rescheduled for the following Friday. Finally after they replaced the cap and put a seal on the door I have a smoke filled house and they're telling me they have nobody to come back and correct the problem. Terrible after the service business. Its ridiculous that I am having the same exact issue from before they diagnosed the problem, supposedly fixed it and charged me now I have to wait and deal with the smoke filled home. No, a chimney crown is not the same as a chimney cap. A chimney crown is a flat cement area on top of a masonry chimney. It starts where the masonry part of the chimney ends at the very top and domes upward toward the flue opening. A chimney cap sits on top of the crown over the flue. It is usually made of metal and allows smoke to escape without letting in rainwater.

A chimney liner isn’t required for an outdoor fireplace; you don’t technically need one if the masonry chimney uses the proper dimensions and is built to code. However, a chimney liner does serve as a protective coating for the flue. Adding a liner could improve performance, safety, and durability. In short, while not necessary, it wouldn’t hurt.

Capping a gas line can be done on the same day, whereas completely removing a fireplace and chimney can span several weeks.
