Small jobs welcome

"We have a 6k sqft steel framed home/shop structure. After we noticed some cracks in our attached shop floor, as well as cabinets pulling away from the walls by 1/8" and some minor wall cracks, so we were concerned and called Platinum Foundation Repair out to the house for an estimate, in hopes it wouldn't cost as much by catching it early enough. The gentleman that came out did a very thorough inspection, took his time, to look everything over. We were VERY surprised that he stated we didn't need anything done! In fact, he said we should caulk a few areas and keep an eye on them for the next 6 months to see if there were any noticeable changes. While we are relieved no work needs to be done at this time, we are equally relieved that if/when it comes time- we have found a reputable company for the job who cares more about doing business with integrity! THANK YOU PLATINUM FOUNDATION REPAIR FOR BEING ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS! We will be recommending This company to others!!"

"Maxey Contracting did an excellent job for us. Blake & Jason were awesome. They are honest, dependable, professional and hard-working. They tore out an old 10x10 deck and installed a beautiful 16x16 composite deck. We were so happy and satisfied with our new deck, that we hired them to install a 40 foot block retaining wall and do a landscaping project. Overall, they did an exceptional job for us and we would highly recommend them for your next project. We'll definitely call them back, when we need their help. What more could someone ask for from a contractor!"

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

Rebar is a steel support that goes inside concrete to prevent structural damage over time. Concrete is susceptible to impact, weight, and tension. By inserting rebar into the concrete during the installation, you can help extend its lifespan and avoid hazardous situations where the foundation of your home gives way to tensile forces.

The lifespan of a retaining wall varies based on its material, installation quality, maintenance, and local climate, with an average range of 20 to 100 years. Retaining walls made from durable materials like concrete, stone, and brick generally last a minimum of 50 years. Concrete walls typically last between 50 and 100 years, while brick can last for over a century in ideal conditions. Timber retaining walls can last from 20 to 40 years, depending on the wood quality, and pressure-treated wood walls average around 30 years. It is important to note that a retaining wall can fail prematurely if it was poorly constructed, for example, with inefficient footings or without necessary rebar reinforcements.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.
