The company provided a quick and fair quotation using photos and measurements that I provided of the deck along with a description of the services I was requiring.  Upon my acceptance of the quote, the work was scheduled that week.

When the technician arrived, he assessed that due to the previous staining job being performed on wet pressure treated wood that we would need to use a different type of stain product than was originally quoted.  The difference in price was ~$50 and we mutually agreed to the change in scope.

The technician performed the cleaning on the first day.  The cleaning consisted of a blower to remove any large debris and a pressure wash with a cleaning solution.

The staining occurred on day two and was applied with a gas-powered sprayer.  We had chosen a Sherman Williams Solid Color Traditional Russet Superdeck Stain.  As Good As New offered a 3 year warranty for this product.

Upon completion, the technician and I walked the job and looked for missed spots.  We found none.  He then gave detailed instructions on how to care for the new stain and told me to call if we had any issues during the warranty period.

Overall a very positive experience with As Good As New.

"An older home had been neglected for at least 3 years. Magic Touch cleaned up the mess, removed dead plants, removed or trimmed trees too close to the houseand removed an entire Fall's worth of dead leaves. They worked quickly and professionally. We were impressed enough to accept their offer of monthly maintenance."

"My fences were over 15 years old and badly in need of replacement. I contacted and received quotes from three fence companies from Angie's List and also got an over-the-phone quote from Home Depot. Of the three, Robert Ochoa's quote was the most thorough (with diagrams and exact pricing of all details) and that made it so much easier to compare to the other quotes. Home Depot's phone quote was ridiculously high, so they got tossed out immediately. I did feel pretty comfortable with capabilities of the fence companies that gave me quotes and believed they all do quality work. In the end, however, Robert's quote was lower by at least $400 and he threw in a free three-foot gate via Angie's List coupon.
I gave Robert half-down before the job for my back fence, and split the half-down amount with my next-door neighbor for the fence between our properties. Robert explained everything that his crew would be doing to build the fences, including having all of the utility services mark their wires, pipes, etc. prior to the start of the job. I'm always a little concerned whenever I give someone an up-front deposit for work not yet begun, but I understand the fact that fence companies have to buy the materials specific to the job they're doing, so they need that money up-front. However, I felt that I could trust Robert and, by the time the companies came to mark their utilities with neon-colored spray paint on my back lawn, I knew Robert was good for his word.
The work began mid-afternoon on Thursday with demolition of the old fences. By the time it was dark, they'd already torn down the fences and were beginning to sink the post holes. I had some concerns about the depth of the post holes, especially for the 8-foot fence, but when I saw Hector's three-foot auger blade going all the way down into the ground, I knew they were preparing the holes to the proper depth to do the job right. Friday morning, a total of four men showed up and worked seemingly tirelessly until about 7 PM. I do a lot of home improvement projects myself and I recognize skilled and experienced workmanship when I see it. All of the guys, from those toting wood, to those setting posts in concrete, to those setting the cross-members and nailing the pickets, seemed to know exactly what they were doing. This was confirmed when I saw them deal with two large trees that are right at the fence line and the way they made room for the trees in the construction of the fence, especially with regard to the 12-inch rot-board they put at the bottom.
They were mostly done with the back fence by Friday evening and came back Saturday to finish building the side fence. By late in the afternoon, they had installed my back gate with a deadbolt lock I had and I was really impressed with the metal frame they mount the gate on and the cedar posts they use to prevent future warping and problems with the operation of the gate. By the time they left, they'd cleaned up all work areas well and both fences look absolutely great. Looking down the side of my back fence from the gate, the entire job looks level, true, and very sturdy. They placed the fence posts on 6-foot centers, so hopefully that will add to the strength of the fence whenever another hurricane hits Houston, and, of course, that event will be the real test of the integrity of the work. For the time being, however, I believe the fences should hold up just fine.
Robert came by a few days later to make sure I was happy with the work before he requested the balance of payment for the job. I was and he got paid the balance on the spot.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the work done by Robert Ochoa's Fence Company and found him and all his employees to be friendly and very courteous. I know he does other kinds of work, including siding, so I won't hesitate to call him whenever I'm ready to tackle those jobs. For now, the best reference I can give his company is based on a job with exceeded my expectations and I won't hesitate to recommend that others use his services, too."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Footings for ground-level decks need to be at least 12 inches deep, and some areas require them to be even deeper. A standard range for deck footings is anywhere from 12 to 48 inches. The minimum footing depth is determined by an area’s frost line and soil conditions. If you’re unsure how deep to install deck footings, check local building codes to find the minimum footing depth in your area.

In the majority of cases, you don’t need regulatory permission or permits to remove decking components and materials. However, the exception is if you live in or near a wildlife conservation area, which could require permits and consent prior to beginning the demolition. Check with a local regulatory agency for more information.

Whether you need a permit depends on the deck design and local regulations. Most areas mandate a building permit if the deck is over a specific height or if it's attached to a pre-existing structure. Shorter, freestanding decks may not require a permit, but you should check with local zoning ordinances and your homeowners association for specifics.

Yes, you can build a pool deck yourself, but it takes precision, a lot of time, and many specific tools. You’ll need to create a deck plan, be careful with measurements, cut each piece of wood, secure the pieces properly, and ensure the deck meets building codes. Building a deck around a pool is a rewarding DIY, but it’s time- and labor-intensive, so thoughtfully consider your abilities and the time you have before embarking on this DIY.

Your deck may look or feel fuzzy after pressure washing because the high-pressure spray tears some wood fibers as it removes the outer layer of dead and discolored wood. This fuzzy effect is a normal part of the pressure-washing process and will go away on its own in a few weeks. You can opt to spot-sand your deck if you’d like to remove it more quickly.
