Polar Bear Chimney Sweep was started in 1985 by my father. I grew up helping him by installing fireplaces and stoves. He has since passed the company to me. Our number one priority to this day is still to make sure our customers have a safe fireplace and/or stove to heat their home.

"This is the same owner of DFW General contracting. See that review. Charles Christie and Jason Schemmel. Same guys have that as are listed here as contacts. I had to spend upwards of $3,500 less than a year after they repaired my roof. They did a horrible job!!! The flashing around our chimney looked like a child did the work. Holes, screws and tons of caulking. I've added photos here of what these guy's call workmanship, or lack there of. I've been trying to pin them down to sue them. They may try to change their company name but I will find them. I'm back having to repair the inside of my home due to the water damage from their shoddy work. I will go as far as saying NEVER hire these guys and I mean ANY work. Don't even let them cut your grass."

Park Place Roofing, LLC was formed from the ground-up in Dallas in 2005 by The Smith Family, who have had their hand in the construction business for over 50 years. The Smith's spent their early careers working tough jobs in commercial and residential construction as well as farming, where they learned a lot about the value of hard work and an appreciation for the tangible results that come with manual labor. They started Park Place Roofing with the goal to bring honesty and dedication to the roofing industry, their customers, and their employees.

"My Husband and I have rental houses throughout McKinney and we have found our forever roofing company. Park Place Roofing has replaced three roofs so far and we could not be happier with the quality of work. Brenda, the owner, is so easy to work with. She does what she says and says what she does. I highly recommend !"

"To begin with it was good. Great communication along with a good price. After he was paid the service and communication went down hill. The roof was removed and replaced on a Saturday. The crew did not speak any English and used a phone app to communicate with me. Marc was no where to be found on the replacement day. Fast forward 10 months, and there are a few minor issues. One of the roofing shingles blew off. And a vent pipe in the attic was broken. Also, the gutter guards were missing. Marc's replies were that a tree rubbed the shingle lose, the nearest tree branch is over 20 feet away. Then he said it was a squirrel. The pipe he said had nothing to do with the roof. I made the comment that the roofers had to move the pipe on the roof to get the shingles in place. After waiting over a month for someone to come check everything out, Marc quoted me $500 to make the repairs that should have been covered under warranty. I asked ofr his Insurance information and he would not provide it to me. I have several pictures of the damaged items."

Chimney Caps questions, answered by experts

No, a chimney crown is not the same as a chimney cap. A chimney crown is a flat cement area on top of a masonry chimney. It starts where the masonry part of the chimney ends at the very top and domes upward toward the flue opening. A chimney cap sits on top of the crown over the flue. It is usually made of metal and allows smoke to escape without letting in rainwater.

If a roof is not vented, trapped air and moisture have nowhere to go and will cause moisture to build up in the attic. When moisture builds up, it can cause mold and mildew, leaks, and rot. It will make the space hot and stuffy, which can result in higher energy bills as the HVAC system works overtime to regulate the temperature.

It’s possible to install solar panels on a tar and gravel roof, but it does increase the risk of roof leaks more than installing solar on a sloped roof would. Flat roofs pool water in heavy rain and hold onto snow longer than sloped roofs do, so all aspects of the roof will be exposed to moisture and water more readily. Adding roof penetrations to install the solar racking system will increase that risk further.

A roof’s life span depends on the materials in use and on the quality of the work from the roofer. Most roofs will last anywhere from 25 to 50 years. Damage from storms or seeing signs of a bad roofing job could lead to a shorter life span, though.

Rain shouldn’t come in through your ridge vents unless your vents are damaged or the rain is accompanied by very high winds. Most ridge vents use flashing or baffling to keep out rain, snow, and debris. If your ridge vent isn’t baffled, rain is more likely to enter your attic, so ridge vents with baffles are a better choice in areas with regular rainfall.
