"We’re currently remodeling two bathrooms under the same contract. The first bathroom is complete, and the second one just started this week. While their bid wasn’t the lowest we received, it felt fair and, in hindsight, definitely worth it. The project manager was an excellent communicator—knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and never pressured us to accept the offer. We’re extremely pleased with the quality of work on the first bathroom and are confident the second will turn out just as well. A tip for future clients: make sure you have all the necessary materials on hand. We did, and the team completed the bathroom ahead of schedule. The space is narrow, so the photo angles don’t do it justice, but I hope they still give a sense of the high-quality work delivered."

"We love our cabinets! They look fantastic while remaining affordable. The friendly staff at AWD helped us from start to finish. They are very knowledgeable and gave us advice and tips when needed. They were receptive and patient with our ever-changing needs. Once we finalized our purchase, we received our cabinets within two weeks! The cabinets are very sturdy and the color is beautiful. The hinges and hardware are high quality. We are extremely pleased with AWD and would recommend them to any friends or family looking for good cabinets at a fair price."

Small jobs welcome

"This project was much more than just tile installation but there was no option for shower repair so this seemed to be the best option to choose from. THE SITUATION: We had purchased a new home and it turned out that both showers leaked and damaged the ceilings of the rooms below. The work that needed to be done was opening the drywall ceiling and finding the reason for the leak, fixing the problem, and repairing the ceilings. Juan Perrett was one of three contractors to take a look at it and give an estimate. His pricing was a lot more reasonable and he was just as knowledgeable as the other contractors. THE WORK DONE: We had to remove the entire shower floor and pan with all the concret, also the lowest row of tiles of both showers. Juan repaired the damage that was done to the studs, understood why the showers were leaking and redid both shower pans. He helped me to solve the problem with mismatching tiles and fixed everything so it looks as "brand new and nothing ever happened. The ceilings got repaired and also look as new and absolutely perfect. They left me a well repaired and thoroughly cleaned house. SUMMARY: I am really happy with Juan Perrett's work. It was a pleasure to work with him, everything went smooth and he is reliable, punctual, and very fair in the pricing. I highly recommend Juan Perrett, the quality of his work is outstanding!"

"

We are very happy with the outcome in our kitchen. We love granite countertops and cabinets. CJM helped selection process or directed us to suppliers for excellent support (and out come). The transformation opened up our kitchen and created a fresh look in our main floor

Closets questions, answered by experts

If you’re on a tight budget, the least expensive material you can buy for DIY closet shelves is chipboard, a.k.a. particle board. This inexpensive material is made from a pulp of sawdust, resin, and glue that’s pressed together under high temperature and pressure. As you can imagine, it’s not very sturdy and might buckle under your blue jean collection, so you should only use it if you’re storing very light items.

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

The time it takes to build a closet varies widely depending on the project's size, complexity, and level of customization. On average, construction can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks.

A simple reach-in closet might be completed in less than a day, while a more complex walk-in closet could take one to two days or more. A typical project often falls in the 2-to-5-day range. However, a large, highly customized walk-in closet that requires structural changes, like moving a load-bearing wall, will take significantly longer.

A professional contractor can provide the most accurate time estimate for your specific project. If you are planning a DIY build, it is best to budget additional time.

If you have a bathroom closet with movable shelves, you can place them at virtually any spacing that works for you. Useful measurements between shelves in the working, or middle, section can be 10 to 16 inches for towels or linens. Lower or higher shelving could be up to 24 inches between shelves to store lesser-used or bulky items or boxes.

You may need a building permit to add a closet, depending on the size and kind of work required to install it. The most likely scenario requiring a permit involves changing the structure of the house and performing electrical work for closet lighting. A permit can cost between $100 and $450. If you’re installing a smaller reach-in closet, a permit may not be required, but always check with your local municipality and consult a closet designer or builder.
