Flat paint has a much shorter life span than other finishes due to the lack of protective gloss. How long flat paint lasts on walls will depend on sun exposure, moisture, temperature variations, how often it is cleaned, and more. A 7 to 12-inch wide microfiber or synthetic paint roller with a nap of 3/8 to 1/2 an inch will give you smooth, even paint coverage on interior walls. Satin paint is better for high-traffic spaces that need to hold up to a lot of cleaning. It’s also best for spaces where walls are free of imperfections since the light reflecting off a glossy satin finish will highlight them even more. On the other end of the spectrum, think of flat paint for walls with dents or divots you want to conceal. Since flat paint isn’t as strong as satin paint, it’s not great for spaces that need a lot of cleaning.

When applying multiple coats, wait four to six hours for each coat to dry. Not waiting long enough can result in streaks, peeling, and uneven color. Plus, it will be more difficult to discern where the second coat has already been applied.

You can paint over wood, wood-laminate, and metal cabinets, but you need to prepare the surface first. Plastic laminate cabinets and thin veneers may accept a layer of paint depending on their condition, but they require special techniques and paints. If your cabinets sag or have significant damage, it may be a better investment to replace your cabinets than paint over them.
