Small jobs welcome

"After discovering a drip from a shutoff valve under our kitchen sink, I turned to Home Advisor to find a plumber. I entered the particulars and hit the enter button on my computer. Almost instantly, my phone rang. I mean within seconds. It was Bobby with Tennessee Standard Plumbing and Drain Experts. I explained our situation and Bobby explained our options. I agreed to have him send a crew to investigate and determine a solution. He said a crew would arrive between 1 and 5 pm that same day. Shortly after 1 pm, I received a call from the crew informing me they would arrive within 20 minutes. Right on time, the crew backed their big blue truck in the driveway. They put on their face mask (because of this COVID19 crap), shoe protectors and introduced themselves presenting me with a very impressive metal business card. They were Jonathan Marsh and Casey Field. They were in uniform, very polite, and ready to find out what was required to solve our problem. Jonathan did an assessment of the situation and determined it was not the shutoff valve leaking. The leak was actually occurring at the connection of the valve to the pipe coming thru the wall. He explained what they would have to do to solve the problem and worked up a quotation. I agreed and they went to work. They replaced the defective galvanized pipe with new stainless-steel nipples. Installed new shutoff valves and hoses. They reconnected everything, tested all for leaks, cleaned up (they did not make a mess), and were finished. I have to say we are completely satisfied with Tennessee Standard, Bobby, and the crew, Jonathan and Casey. They were all so professional and so detailed and solved our problem. I highly recommend Tennessee Standard Plumbing and Drain Experts because they are just that, Experts!"

"SMK plumbing did a great job for me with a whole house water re-plumbing & main water line from the street. The team was efficient, professional, and polite. Job was started and completed in one day. They even moved the whole house shut off and pressure valve to a very easy to get to location."

"We are pleased with our bath remodel that included a new tub, tub surround and wainscot walls. There was one small problem with the walls due to the ceiling and walls not being plumb however they did go above and beyond by doing more than was was agreed upon by making plumbing improvements, installing a new lighted medicine cabinet and repairing a light fixture. They were very courteous and the installer even made a suggestion for a change that we agreed would be better."

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

The time it takes to install or replace a faucet depends on the complexity of the job. A plumber can typically replace a kitchen faucet in 30 minutes to one hour. A standard installation often takes a plumber one to two hours, which is a similar amount of time for an experienced DIYer performing a simple replacement. However, the job can take much longer if there are complications. For example, if the plumbing system needs modifications, or if you are installing a wall-mounted or freestanding model that requires opening up walls or flooring to run new plumbing, the project could take as long as seven to eight hours for a professional to complete.

According to the EPA, there is no safe level of lead in the blood, and so the maximum contaminant level goal (MCLG) for lead in water is zero. Even at low levels, lead is harmful to human health. It can also remain in the body and build up over time with repeated exposure.

You’ll only need to replace your sink’s pipes when you start to notice signs of wear like corrosion or leaking. Most pipes last somewhere between 20 and 100 years, depending on the material. Copper and cast iron can last up to 100 years. Galvanized steel and brass generally have a 50-year lifespan. PVC pipes last 25 to 40 years.

If there's no water coming out of the spigot, or barely any water, you might have a clogged water line. Areas with hard water are prone to this problem because the high mineral content in hard water causes build-up in pipes and water lines. This constricts the water flow and causes water to slowly trickle out, if at all.

To measure pipe size, you can use a ruler, a soft tape measure, or a caliper. You can find a special pipe caliper that has iron or copper pipe sizes already marked. Rulers work if the end of the pipe is exposed. If your pipe is still attached to the plumbing, you’ll need to go for a soft tape measure or caliper.
