Ideally, your chimney cap should be at least 8 inches above the top of the flue, though it's better if it's even higher. You want it to sit that high because it won't affect the chimney's draft, which pulls the smoke up and out of your chimney and away from your home.

Deciding when to replace your fireplace depends on its condition and your preferences. Replacements may be necessary if your fireplace shows extensive damage, safety issues, or inefficiency. Signs include deteriorating masonry, cracked firebox panels, or a faulty chimney. Aesthetic reasons, such as outdated design, can also drive replacement. Wanting something more sustainable and energy-efficient is another good reason to replace your old fireplace.

Some types of electric fireplaces use more electricity than others. Models that produce 1,500 watts will have more of an effect on your heating bill than 750-watt models. 

Electric fireplaces use an average of $1.85 of electricity every eight hours. These minimal operational costs aren’t likely to make a big difference in your electric bill—unless you’re using it as a primary heating source for your home and it’s running most of the time.
