"It seemed to go ok at first, but later found out that the system is softening the OUTSIDE water. We have had three systems installed in different houses and none of them conditioned the outside water. When I called to ask why they did that they said that it is not uncommon based on pipe structure to condition outside water. They then offered to fix it for a fee. However, they never mentioned before the install that they would be conditioning outside water, nor did they offer an alternative. Second, the instructions were clear to run the drinking system line to the refrigerator. It does not appear that we are getting pure water to the refrigerator. I have called twice to ask about this. Both times I was told I would get a call back. The first time they said I would get a call to discuss this situation. No call received. The second time I was told I would get a call to schedule someone to come out. No call received. The system itself works fine and is appropriately frugal with salt usage. However, this company's service is lacking."

"I recently moved to Clarksville and wanted a water filtration system. I called multiple companies but most of their prices were very high or could not give me an answer only a monthly price. When I scheduled Second Mile to install a Water Softener system they arrived promptly with a notepad, pens, magnets, and business cards. I was impressed with their professionalism and great quality of work. Steve who helped me with the process, was nice and very knowledgeable. This is the company that I would recommend for anyone who wants a water softener system. I would not waste your time with the other companies who will try to sell you a water softener system for the price of a Prius. I would recommend Second Mile Service Group to anyone who is interested in having clean water, don't bother with other companies."

"Dustin came into our lives completely by accident, as we were attempting to chase down the original company who installed our water softener. Turns out the original company is now out of business - but that didnâ t stop Dustin from helping us! If anything, it made him even more determined to help fix our issue. What really impressed me what Dustinâ s customer service, even though we had never technically been customers. He is such a gentleman and is incredibly professional, going so far as to patch up our system as much as he could without having the correct parts (he doesnâ t sell this brand, but he STILL went out of his way to help us as much as possible!) Unfortunately our water softener is on its way out. But even so, I consider it a win since we will DEFINITELY be calling Pure Southern Water when the end finally comes! If they take such amazing care of folks who arenâ t even technically customers, I know weâ ll be extremely well taken care of when we buy our replacement water softener through them! Thanks Dustin!! Youâ re an absolute rock star!!"

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

No. You should never directly drain a water softener into a sewer cleanout. This practice is illegal in many areas because it could allow raw sewage to get into your drinking water and make you seriously ill. Many places have codes requiring a specific seal, pipe, and a large air gap between a water softener and a sewage cleanout. Check out Florida's Plumbing Building Code as an example of what these restrictions might look like.

While not everyone can detect taste differences in high-calcium water, water that has a slightly metallic taste probably has too much calcium.

It’s not a good idea to oversize your water softener. Doing so will mean the tank doesn’t get full, which can lead to channeling. This leads to a large portion of the resin beads not being utilized and the beads at the bottom of the tank being overused. Over time, this will reduce the efficiency of your system, not to mention that the upfront cost of an oversized softener is unnecessarily high. If you have a timed regeneration cycle rather than a demand-based one, you’ll also spend far more on replacing salt than you need to.

The most accurate way to determine whether you have hard water is to purchase a water test kit from a hardware store or send a tap water sample to a lab. But there are some signs you can look out for without professional testing. For instance, if you're consistently dealing with mineral stains on your glassware, windows, and shower doors, you're likely to have hard water. Hard water can also make it harder to lather and rinse soap, so if you're struggling to work up a good lather in the shower, hard water might be the culprit.

No, a water descaler won't descale pipes. The charged water running through the pipes may very slowly dissolve mineral deposits and hold them inside the water, but it's a very gradual process. If your pipes do need descaling, it's much better to get a local plumber to descale your pipes.
