"IFoam gave an estimate quickly, and performed the work quickly. The final scope was a bit different than what I expected, with the added vapor barrier not being taped down/to the wall, but the actual insulation install was performed satisfactory."

"I had been working with Jeff Wells for attic insulation for my mother's house. He was professional, nice and answered any questions we had. We had questions after the quote and he answered them in a timely manner. He setup the schedule for the attic insulation even after we had to reschedule a couple of times. Arnaldo and Juan came out to do the installation. They were prompt, nice and was respectful of property. They were hard working and did a great job. They cleaned up everything when they were done. I am very satisfied with Jeff, Arnaldo and Juan. I will definitely give Jeff a call again for my own house in the future."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Most homeowners installing blown-in insulation as a one-off DIY project should simply rent a blower. They tend to be very heavy, and contractor-grade machines can cost $13,000 to $16,000.

Although it’s not required, air ventilation in a finished basement can help improve the air quality, prevent moisture and mold issues, keep musty odors away, and also maintain the air quality throughout the rest of your home. Proper ventilation will help maintain the value of your investment in finishing your basement. Try basement ventilation methods like installing vents or a dehumidifier for best results.

An insulated garage door is a great long-term investment if it’s within your budget. They save energy and give the door year-round usability. In other words, the door pays for itself after a few nasty winters. Most modern garage doors already have a fair amount of insulation, so look into those options if you don’t feel comfortable splurging.

Vapor barriers in attics are a bit outdated and most areas no longer recommend them for attic spaces. For vented attics, the best method is usually to install drywall and cover it with latex paint before attaching insulation fiberglass, cellulose, or foam insulation. When renovating an attic to use as a living space, a contractor can guide you on the best way to cover insulation.

If you feel your energy bills are too high or your HVAC system is working harder than necessary to maintain the correct temperature in your home, you may have an under-insulated home. If you’re unsure, consider having your system’s efficiency assessed by a local independent energy auditor.
