Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. Although you may not see immediate damage to wood after exposing it to chlorine bleach, its strength and integrity are now compromised.

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.

Using a paint sprayer takes a little more practice than a roller, but both are equally effective. If you’re in a hurry and have the experience, a paint sprayer can save you some time on your project. If you’ve never used a sprayer and don’t have the time to learn, using a roller or brush will get you closer to your dream results.
