It might be possible to dissolve hair caught in a drain, but it’s usually not a good way to go about clearing the clog. Some sources mention that baking soda and vinegar can do the trick, but this won’t actually dissolve the hair. The hydrochloric acid in drain cleaners can dissolve the hair over time, but it will much more quickly destroy your plumbing pipes and leave you with bigger issues. The process takes about 30 minutes or up to 5 hours, depending on the size of the line, how easy it is to access, and how long it’s been since the previous cleaning. If your sewer line hasn’t been cleaned in a couple of years or you don’t even know the last time it’s been cleaned, it’s time to call a pro.

If you want to avoid using a snake to unclog a drain, or if you don’t have one, try vinegar and baking soda. Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. Wait for 15 minutes, and then run hot water (but not boiling water) down the drain to see if the clog is clear. Repeat multiple times as needed.

It's advisable to have your sewer line inspected every three to five years to ensure its proper functioning and detect any potential issues early on. However, the frequency of inspections can vary based on factors such as the age of your sewer system, the type of pipes used, and your property's location. If you notice any warning signs like slow drains, foul odors, or sewage backups, it's essential to schedule an inspection promptly, regardless of the regular maintenance schedule.
