Yes, crawl spaces can attract bugs, especially since moisture tends to build up in the space, and moisture attracts pests. A good way to prevent pest infestation in your crawl space is to install a vapor barrier—called crawl space encapsulation—on the interior to seal the space, along with a French drain or some other kind of foundation drainage system outside to keep runoff out of your crawl space. Another option is using a portable backup generator as a power supply for your sump pump. Unlike a battery-powered backup which has limited power, a generator can run around the clock for as long as you need it. 

Or you can opt for a water-powered backup pump, which uses your home’s water supply as a source of power. However, this may not be the best option if you find your house frequently has low water pressure.

Crawl space encapsulation typically lasts between 10 to 20 years. If you experience a catastrophic event, like a flood, or poorly encapsulate your space with low-quality materials, it may only last a decade. Otherwise, as long as you properly maintain your crawl space, a high-quality encapsulation can last more than 20 years.

Encapsulation can take the place of crawl space vents since it protects the area from moisture and air all year round. Determining whether you should open or close crawl space vents can be complicated since it often depends on the weather and humidity. Skip this step by investing in crawl space encapsulation whenever possible.

Mold can grow anywhere in your home where there’s moisture that doesn’t dry out, usually in areas that are either not ventilated properly or where moisture gathers continuously. Insulation, drywall, and foundations typically provide mold with areas to grow if moisture is present and does not have a chance to dry out.
