"Kyle, the owner of Canyon Electric, was recommended to us as a trustworthy electrician in the Black Hills area. We had purchased a vacation home in Lead and were having a hot tub and sauna installed. We needed to add 2 240 amp breakers, a new breaker box, and hard wiring both units. We are from across the state and had a deadline for the hot tub installation, which required all wiring done very specifically and in place. Kyle was out at our home wiring and prepping before we even arrived. He was in contact with our hot tub retailer and made sure everything was done perfectly. The wiring on both units was done efficiently. He even did work on one of our bathroom exhaust fans and had it going in quick order. Kyle was a very pleasant person to deal with and we were very impressed with the high standards of his work. We would highly recommend Canyon Electric for any and all of your electrical needs."

"I was only in Spearfish for a short time so Brent worked me in. The team he sent had to work with old wiring to add new plugs and lights. All was done expertly in one cold day outside."

"Nate was on-time, friendly, professional and efficient. He installed all new updated outlets in my home and lowered all the cove heaters down away from the ceiling. He was happy to explain and answer any questions I had as well. Iâ m a Realtor and he is someone I will definitely refer to clients in the future!"

"I was contacted by a Tech at the assigned time and had to run to the store for a cable I needed. When I called back, I had a different Tech, but he was able to continue right where I had left off. There was no need to explain anything again. Awesome."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

The copper wire used in knob and tube wiring systems can last up to 100 years. However, it’s considered a dangerous and outdated wiring method because the cloth, fabric, or rubber insulation sheathing can become brittle and fall apart. Knob and tube wiring systems should be inspected if you’re considering buying a home with this type of wiring, or if you have problems with frequently tripping breakers, a sign that you may need to replace them.

Three-way switches are only replaceable with three-way switches. A single-pole switch won't work if you replace one or more of a pair of three-way switches. By electrical code, three-way switch configurations are necessary at the top and bottom of a staircase between residential floors.

Yes, you can run an above-ground electrical conduit and stay within National Electrical Code safety guidelines. Just make sure you check the code requirements of your project with the local building regulations office. You should work with a local electrician to complete this type of project due to the personal safety hazards.

Ultimately, the best device depends on what you’re measuring. A voltmeter only measures volts, while a multimeter measures volts, current, resistance, humidity, and possibly much more, depending on the model. If you think you’ll need to measure more than volts, consider investing in a multimeter so you have a tool that can help you with various household projects.

Removing a fuse from the fuse box is relatively safe under normal circumstances. The task becomes dangerous if wires or wire terminals are exposed or in the case of a disaster such as flooding in the home where water can act as an electrical conductor.
