I am willing to do small misc. odd jobs/handyman type work; but my primary focus is on bathroom, kitchen, basement and other misc. home renovations. I have worked for other general contractors in the Charlotte-Metro area for 15+ years, and am looking to really grow my own small family business. The only way I know to do this is by providing great value, service and quality work to my clients. By doing this along with being prompt and professional I hope to earn repeat business from my clients, or at the very least some potential referrals to their friends and family when they are needing work done in the future. Please feel free to contact me at 704-975-7713 or at [email protected] to schedule an appointment for a free estimate. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

An asphalt driveway should be at least 3 inches thick over a compacted gravel base. Areas with poor drainage should have a thicker stone base. To install a new asphalt driveway over an existing driveway, the new asphalt should be at least 2 inches thick and the existing driveway should be in relatively good condition.

Instead of a set number of types, asphalt comes in variations designed for different needs. Some are categorized by temperature—hot mix, warm mix, and cold mix. Others are sorted by composition, like dense-graded, gap-graded (such as Stone Matrix Asphalt), porous, and mastic asphalt. There are also modified versions with added compounds like polymers, rubber, or emulsions. Instead of focusing on a number, it may be more useful to understand how contractors customize asphalt for durability, climate, and traffic conditions.

On average, asphalt dries within 24 to 72 hours, meaning it’s solid enough for light traffic—walking and careful driving. Full curing—when asphalt reaches peak strength—can take anywhere from three months to a year. During that time, heavy loads and sharp objects can leave marks. Weather, asphalt mix, and thickness all affect how quickly it dries and cures. If you want your asphalt to last, treat it gently until it’s fully cured. For the best results, check with a professional asphalt contractor for their advice.

Since it has a smoother surface using a mixture of finer rock and sand, 41A tends to be the best asphalt grade for a driveway, especially for residential driveways. Other options are available, but more homeowners choose 41A for a smoother asphalt driveway. Talk with your asphalt driveway professional for recommendations of the best grade for your specific driveway.

Asphalt can get sticky in high temperatures and intense sunlight and is better for cooler or moderate climates, while concrete is more likely to crack in colder climates where water can seep into the slab and freeze. Asphalt requires more maintenance in terms of sealing, it has a slightly shorter lifespan, on average, and it’s a bit more expensive to install. Concrete will last longer with less maintenance, and it offers you more options for customization, including staining and stamped patterns. As such, a concrete driveway adds to home value more than an asphalt driveway in many cases.
