"We received a quote to repair 7 smaller-sized holes in our stucco. We thought the quote was high; however, we assumed it was because they needed to rent machinery to reach our chimney and roofline for 2 of the holes that needed to be patched. We also assumed it would take them a lot longer than 3 hours to make the repairs. They charged us $1,900 for three hours of work. That is over $600 an hour! The materials they used cost less than $100 and they even used our paint. We tried to negotiate a lower price and the owner told us to pay or he'd call his attorney. We are making a small court claim to obtain at least half of the proceeds. Regardless of what you think, stucco does not take a long time to repair; especially if the holes are smaller than ours. There are plenty of honest contractors who will repair for A LOT cheaper than what we paid. And this all happened after Hurricane Helene when Lexington was hit so hard. Run from this contractor. They are a rip-off and completely dishonest!!!!"

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

It’s not a good idea to plaster over broken plaster (unless by broken you’re referring to cracked, in which case that’s perfectly fine). However, broken plaster can be a sign of a larger underlying issue like foundation damage or severe damage to the lath holding up the plaster, so it’s worth investigating before you simply plaster on top of the damage.

It is possible to repair plaster walls yourself, but it’s not always a good idea. Hiring a professional means you’ll have expert eyes on the damage looking to see if there is an underlying issue or if the cracks are just from normal expansion and contraction. Additionally, a professional’s plaster repair will very likely last longer than a DIY job, which means you could end up saving money over time by going with a pro from the start.

Painting or plastering over water-damaged wall plaster is only a temporary fix and doesn’t fix the real problem. If you must, wait until the surface is completely dry before applying a new layer. However, we recommend you remove the damaged plaster and properly perform a repair or hire a professional to do it. Water damage repair is normally covered by your home insurance.

Plastering comes at a higher cost than installing drywall, but it also provides some pretty enticing benefits. First, plaster usually lasts longer than drywall, so long-term costs will usually be lower. Second, plaster is a highly insulative material, so it might help make your living area feel more comfortable and keep your heating and cooling costs lower, especially in the summer and winter. Finally, plastering is naturally textured, so it helps hide imperfections and often adds warmth to your home that drywall won’t.

Drying alone can take 1 to 4 hours to dry to the touch per plaster layer, but some types of plaster take several hours longer to dry. However, this doesn’t mean the job is done because plaster doesn’t fully harden until it cures, which can take a few days to a couple of weeks. It may take even longer if you’re building a new, pretty thick plaster wall. Allow the plaster to cure before painting it.
