"This company did an excellent job installing porcelain tile on our screened porch. They helped us select the tile and pattern, and completed the project in a timely manner at a reasonable cost. Our neighbors who saw the porch were also very impressed. When we discovered that the screen door did not quite close correctly, they responded promptly and fixed the problem. Because of the quality of their work and their professionalism, we would not hesitate to recommend them for any flooring project."

"We were extremely pleased with the entire process of selection, pricing and workmanship for our newly purchased vacation home. This was a product we had not used and needed guidance on types, colors, durability etc. Joe and his son were very knowledgeable and allowed us time to make an informed decision. They did a beautiful job with installation and were very accommodating with our schedule since we were from another state. Our place looks beautiful and we would highly recommend this business."

"OMGosh, I can't even begin to tell you how thankful we are to have found TC Flooring! Purchasing a place 1000 miles away from home can be scary if you don't know the right people to get the job done. Tony was great and made it easy! He responded quickly to our texts, calls, and emails. He and his crew were amazing. Efficient and professional. Thank you TC! Looking forward to working with you on future projects!"

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

No, tiling over painted walls or wallpapered surfaces is generally not recommended. Textured surfaces and paints will affect the adhesive, possibly causing tiles to lift or fall off. Painted walls with a semi-gloss or high-gloss finish are particularly difficult for adding tiles. It’s wise to strip the paint first if you install the tiles to drywall, although it’s still best to opt for a cement backer board.

The best trowel for penny tile is a 3/16-inch-by-5/32-inch V-notch trowel. Because of the small size of the penny tile, you want a trowel with small notches that can lay a thin layer of mortar on the surface you’re tiling. If the notches are too wide, you risk applying too thick of a layer of mortar, and it can squeeze out between the penny tiles.

Deciding between using a shower pan or tile will likely come down to the shower’s design. You can learn how to install a shower pan liner, but it has a standard look similar to most other showers, though there is some flexibility for material and color choices. Tile, on the other hand, can be customized and is set directly into the shower base. However, a shower tile floor is more difficult to install than a shower pan.

When working on your bathroom floor tiling, you should always tile the floor first and then refit the toilet afterward. This has both practical and visual advantages—the tile will have a better seal, and the installation will look cleaner.

On the other hand, when you try to cut the tiles to fit around the toilet, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage. It’s a lot more work, it’s hard to be precise, and mistakes or miscalculations can lead to future moisture damage to the tiling, grout, and subfloor.

The number of boxes of tile you need depends entirely on the amount of tile in each box or case. Different manufacturers package their tiles differently, and boxes contain different amounts of tile depending on the size, shape, and material. Often, the amount of area that a case will cover is listed in the product description. To calculate the number of boxes you need, take the total square feet of the space and divide it by the number of square feet the box will cover.
