Small jobs welcome

"I hired these folks to install spray foam insulation in the attic. On the scheduled service date, the technicians showed up 2 hours late and didn't bother to give us a courtesy call until I called their office to find out if they were going to show up. When the techs arrived (from Charlotte), they immediately started laying plastic from the front sidewalk through the front door, up the stairs to the attic access. They even taped the plastic to the concrete sidewalk! We were impressed with their prep work. When they were ready to start spraying we left to the hotel. When the work was done (approx 3 hours later), they called and said they were finished and leaving. When we got home to check, the door was locked and the only evidence that they were even there was the mild chemical odor upstairs in the hallway and some dirty handprints on the attic access hatch (I had to repaint it). Next day, we came home to find the chemical odor was completely gone. The difference this work made to the upstairs temperature is nothing short of amazing, and I wish we had this work done sooner. I intend to have them come back to install this foam in the FROG attic too. My only disappointment with these guys is the lack of customer service communications on the day the work was scheduled. If you are going to be late, then call and tell me. Don't leave your customers hanging for 2 hours not knowing if you are going to show up or not. Other than that, we are pleased with the results."

"I will say on a positive note that Chris showed up when he said he would for an estimate and to start the job. They got right to work and worked all day in the rain. My agreement with them was that a protective plastic would be placed on the garage floor (it was new concrete), IT WAS NOT PLACED. I am not a person to stand over a crew while they work, as I expect professionalism and them doing what they say they are going to do, so I waited until they were finished and I was called out. The first time I was called out, I discovered the plastic I had seen from the porch was not covering the floor but had been used to cover the windows, doors, etc. Which I had been told they would do as well. I was told, well you said you were going to paint the floor. REALLY??? Unfortunately, the closed-cell foam spray was sticking out over an inch from many of the windows and posts. I requested that they be leveled off, they took a saw to them to level them off. The floor was being broom swept and they did not remove the small drops of insulation or dusting on the floor. So now we have to get a concrete cleaner and scrape the floor and power wash before we can put the epoxy paint down. Outside, pieces of foam were left all over the drive as well. Since it was raining, I can't tell if it will easily come off or needs to be scraped off. I do not know if the floor of the garage and drive will have to be acid washed to remove any issues with the foam. Not a happy camper. If only they had done what they said especially with the floor I would not have been so disappointed. I understand blowing foam is not a truly contained action so the foam on the ceiling is not as "pretty" as I would have liked, but it is functional. Please know this review is given from a woman's point of view that has only seen this type of insulation on high-end homes after construction and it was not like this, but then again this is a metal garage."

"Added additional blown insulation R-30 over garage and office. Very polite, professional and cleaned up after themselves. They are also inspecting our HVAC system and cleaning out the dryer duct and vent. Everyone I have spoken with at this company is extremely nice. Once we received an estimate, they were out the next evening to do the insulation."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

The amount and type of insulation your home needs depends on your location, climate, and the specific installation area (attic, walls, or floors). Your local building code will typically determine the minimum required R-value. For specific recommendations, Energy Star suggests the following R-values: homes in the Southern U.S. should have R30 to R60 in attics and R13 to R25 in floors and walls; homes in moderate climates need R38 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls; and homes in northern states require R49 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls.

The most affordable way to insulate behind unfinished walls is to install fiberglass batts or rolls. These total around $0.75 per linear foot, with the width matching the gaps between standard studs perfectly. However, it’s important to consider the R-value of your insulation and the climate in your area, as fiberglass insulation isn’t the best in terms of preventing heat transfer. Plus, the most affordable option may cost more on electricity bills over time. The most affordable way to insulate behind finished walls is to leave them up and use blown-in insulation to avoid drywall replacement.

Insulation provides additional protection for your tankless water heater. Even if the unit is installed inside the house, it’s still a good idea to wrap the unit up with insulation batts, especially if you live in cold climates. For outdoor units, you can build an insulated box around the tankless water heater for freeze protection.

Yes, you can install insulation behind drywall yourself, but only if your walls are not finished. If your studs are exposed, installing fiberglass insulation in roll or batt form is very straightforward and just requires a few tools and some safety equipment. If your walls are already finished and you’re looking to add insulation, it’s better to hire a professional, as you’ll likely need blown-in insulation, which can be dangerous to work with and a challenge to get into the proper areas in your wall voids.

Don’t install insulation near water heaters, oil burners, or any other object that gets hot. Many insulation materials are fire-resistant, but not entirely fire-proof, so you should take precautions to keep hot things away from fiberglass. This is also why it is imperative to box off lighting fixtures and breaker boxes.
