"This was my first experience hiring a contractor and Mr. Sturgess's was great to work with. He was able to meet with me outside of my work hours to go over my plans. His crew was on time, friendly, and answered any questions I had. Mr. Sturgess rates were very reasonable, and he and his team are very honest and easy to work. Since they have finished converting my carport to the screened sun room, I asked if they could go ahead and finish some other projects for me. I can't wait until all of my projects are done."

"Brian did a great job, he was pleasant and easy to work with; his wife who I spoke with on the phone was just as pleasant. They both answered any questions I had and seemed like they wanted me to be pleased from start to finish. I'll definitely be calling them back to change out my other fixtures. Anytime I need electrical work, I'll be calling them."

"I had been having issues with the compressor on my air conditioner tripping.  The AC folks had been out 2 times and couldn't really figure out the problem, so I started to wonder if it was an electrical problem.  As soon as Mark came out and I told him the problem, he immediately said it was not an electrical problem for certain.  I had him check things since he was already out and he did.  He was extremely nice, very willing to answer questions, and good at explaining things.  I felt very confident in his expertise and grateful that he didn't try to take advantage of me and charge me for a bunch of work I didn't need.  I will definitely call him for my future electrical needs!!

"Bo is very professional, very polite, and just an all-around great guy. He did a great job pressure washing my aluminum sided house, fixed a sagging gutter, removed some mildew from my deck, and was wonderful to work with. Will absolutely hire again!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

Removing a load-bearing wall is best handled by professionals. However, if you have the skill set and decide to DIY the project, you will still need at least one additional person to assist you. Aside from helping with demolition, you'll need another hand to install the new support beam.

Framing a house with steel generally takes less time—around five to eight weeks—than most building materials. The steel components can also be made quickly off-site and manufactured with pre-punched holes for running piping and electrical wiring, which will lessen the prep work and extra labor during construction.

Yes, using certified lumber and engineered wood products for reduced environmental impact.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.
