"Ivan did a great job for us. He removed an existing stone backsplash in the kitchen and installed a tile backsplash in its place. Quality of the work was outstanding. Ivan arrived on time, kept dust and debris to a minimum and cleaned up after his work. His work followed installation of new countertops and he was essential to that process. He discovered a number of problems with the countertop installation that provided the support to the stone store for installation of replacement countertops. Also, the price for this work was fair and competitive. One of the things that set Ivan apart was his desire to come by and see the job in order to quote it competitively. He also provided input on tile and grout selection. Bottom line is that we recommend Ivan for any tile work and plan on having him do additional tile work in our home."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Bathrooms are naturally moisture-rich environments, so choose a durable, water-resistant tile for your tub surround. Porcelain and ceramic are two popular options that are also quite affordable. Glass is another good option that’s also low-maintenance—you just need a glass cleaner like you would use on the bathroom mirror. Natural stone tile is porous, but it’s still a viable option if you choose it in a glazed version.

Tile installation can be expensive because it requires more time and labor to install than many other materials. For example, laminate flooring can click and lock into place, and carpet comes in large rolls that you can secure to the floor. On the other hand, tiles need to be cut, laid individually, grouted, and left to cure.

The lifespan of tile flooring can vary significantly based on the material and maintenance. Generally, tile flooring can last anywhere from 10 to 30 years, but high-quality, well-maintained ceramic tile can last 75 to 100 years. To achieve a longer lifespan, you should clean the tiles and grout regularly, reseal the grout annually, keep the floor dry, and avoid placing extremely heavy items on it to prevent cracking. Choosing a high-quality tile (Grade 1) will also contribute to its longevity.

Costs range from $5 to $15 per square foot for installation and $150 to $600 for repairs, depending on the material and complexity.

Yes, but you’ll have to use some other type of tool to avoid damaging the tile and possibly injuring yourself. Some alternatives to tile cutters include a glass cutter, angle grinder, and wet saw. Depending on the tile material, you might simply be able to measure and score it with something sharp, like a carbide-tipped pencil, and break it off. Be sure to sand the edge for a smooth installation.
