"My driveway repair job turned out perfect. It involved breaking up and removing about 500 sq ft of existing concrete, removing tree roots that had raised it into big jagged bumps, and then pouring new concrete. The whole crew was very professional. D.J. and Evan were easy to talk to and kept up good communications throughout the process. No $urprises in the cost, either. I asked them to contact my son and they did two additional jobs at his house, also with great results."

Madewell Concrete is Upstate SC's top trusted concrete provider for driveway replacements. Replacing driveways is a large undertaking and an investment that will pay-off for years in terms of property value and longevity of use, so it’s important to use a driveway replacement company you can trust. Madewell Concrete specializes in residential concrete replacement. If you are considering a driveway replacement in the Upstate SC area, it’s important to trust a professional concrete provider that considers all the functional elements required to build a new driveway that lasts for years to come. Your driveway gets put through a lot — not only is it responsible for holding up against several tons of vehicular metal and rubber, but it also has to endure storms, sleet, and, of course, those blisteringly hot southern summer days in Upstate SC. Although there’s a lot to expect from a driveway, Madewell Concrete will install one that does it all. One component that separates us from competition is our commercial-grade concrete. The commercial-grade concrete we use is over 4 inches thick and has a rating of 3000 to 4000 psi. As a point of reference, 4000 psi is the same as airport runways, so you can rest assured your driveway can withhold extreme wear and tear over the years. Additionally, our commercial-grade concrete requires virtually no maintenance. We guarantee the longevity of our driveway replacements with a 10-year limited warranty. Aesthetic Component of Your Driveway Your driveway is one of the first elements that visitors experience on your property, it should have an attractive, clean appearance that complements the exterior of your home. For this reason, we offer a variety of colors, textures, and patterns for your driveway. So, if you’re not a fan of plain gray, don’t worry—you have many attractive design options to choose from.

"The scope of work was a stamped and tinted home patio and cart path with a concrete pour of approximately 15 cubic yards. The cost of the project ended up 10% higher than the contract with some scope not completed. A follow-up meeting with the MADEWELL CONCRETE CEO ended with a verbal agreement to color the concrete work after the fact to compensate for the incomplete scope of work. THE CEO continued to promise this agreement for a month and then has gone silent for several more months. No follow-up correction work has been done. The basis of my dispute with MADEWELL CONCRETE is what I believe is a poor understanding of a portion of the project by the sales representative and the Project Manager. The patio slab turndown slab was fully discussed by me to them but apparently not discussed internally to know that additional forming materials were required; none of which were brought to the site until later during the prep work. The bobcat access to the patio was also not determined internally before the work. The problems in my view got worse when both the Project Manager (PM) and the concrete foreman left the project during the prep for the concrete pour. The PM to get forming materials for the turndown slab and then again to get color materials, approximately 2 hours. The concrete foreman left for an hour for an unknown reason. The following priorities were explained to lead personnel before the pour day: Patio to be stamped and tinted very close to a former project of MADEWELL CONCRETE. An area in the slab to be level for a hot tub. Cart Path to comply with COE requirements and to be colored. A curb to be placed to channel rainwater away from the patio area. A stair landing area. The plan of getting on site at 8:30 AM with concrete coming at 1:00 PM while Project Manager and foreman left the site during this time was aggressive. The schedule and the leaders leaving the site without providing adequate direction caused the owner to have incomplete work scope per the contract agreement with a 10% higher cost than the agreement. Coupled with concrete color problem - totally not what was asked for which happened to be exactly like what they had previously installed on an earlier MADEWELL CONCRETE project. The team showed up without thorough knowledge of the scope, without proper formwork, telling me in one case, that they had not been told about the flat slab requirement (clearly on the scope document). The crew arrived between 8:00 and 8:30 AM for a 1:00 PM pour, no prior work had been done. The immediate problem of no forming materials for the turndown slab was realized. The complication of getting the bobcat into the patio area was also realized. My complaints are as follows: • Due to the Project Manager leaving the jobsite, decisions were made that ended up with a bad looking and low patio subgrade. An extra load of fill was ordered but the PM and the foreman left the site and were not here to direct where the fill was to go. The crew meanwhile closed access to the patio before fill arrived. The extra fill load was wasted on site causing several more yards of concrete to be required for the patio slab. This ended up being a subsequent charge to me. • One mandatory requirement was to have a level area for a hot tub. The crew foreman fought with me on this, he said he was not told of this and could not do it. The slab area for the hot tub is not level and has to be shimmed by owner to be level. • The in scope 4’ x 4’ concrete stair landing was not installed, creating a significant extra cost for a contractor to be hired for a wood and composite landing. • The in-scope concrete curb was not installed creating water drainage onto the patio. • The in-scope cart pathway turnouts at existing drive were not installed. • Extra fill was poor quality including very large basketball sized chunks that were left for the owner to manage – Many of these were wasted to the landfill by the owner. • The crew let the tandem dirt hauler down on existing concrete – twice; and a crack developed at the large corner where he dumped. • A 30’ tall tree was hit by the bobcat and has died causing permission requirement from the COE to cut down and at more owner expense. • The in scope colored concrete (Deep Tan) is nonexistent except in some areas. In fact, the bulk of the concrete slabs seem to be hardly different than uncolored concrete and in fact whiter."

We are certainly passionate about what we do every day and believe in our company, products, services, ourselves, and most importantly, we believe that our customer is better off having purchased from us. "The quality of the work performed was excellent. We had our existing porch screened in with additional lighting added, added an extension our patio to include a fire pit, and had 2 new lighting fixtures installed in our kitchen. All the services were completed in a timely manner and correctly without rework. The project was completed within budget. Dave and his team were easy to work with and proactively suggested alternatives to our original design that showed his experience regarding successful outdoor projects. Our family highly recommend using DG Builders and will be using them for another project we had in mind."

Decorative Concrete questions, answered by experts

Spraying water on concrete will slow down the curing process and can help create a stronger slab. Spraying your concrete may be necessary if you’re pouring in hotter temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, if it’s particularly windy, or if your new concrete is exposed to intense sunlight. Avoid spraying for the first four hours, and then spray five to 10 times a day for the following week.

Pavers last longer than both concrete and asphalt when well cared for. Since you can place individual pavers that suffer damage, you won't need to repave the entire driveway for an average of up to 50 years. However, the best material for you comes down to your local climate and budget.

A 4-inch-thick concrete slab can support around 4,000 pounds per square foot if a contractor reinforces the slab with rebar, while that same slab without reinforcements will support closer to 1,000 pounds. For the purposes of a patio, 4 inches in thickness without reinforcement should suffice unless you’re installing heavy kitchen equipment or a hot tub on it. In those cases, reinforcing your slab and sticking with 4 inches of thickness should provide plenty of strength.

If you're planning to lay new concrete over an old demolition site, reinforcements may be a good idea for larger builds, such as patios, decks, and concrete slabs. Concrete that exceeds 6 inches of thickness is often reinforced. It will cost more to lay but will give your new structure a solid foundation.

Yes—as long as the area has been properly prepped. Different self-leveling brands and compounds have their own specific instructions for preparation; some may require that you add primer or grind the surface. Without proper preparation of the surface, the compound will not be able to fully bond to the concrete and fill the cure as a separate layer, which makes it prone to chipping.
