"Great people and excellent work! I moved into a house with clogged gutters. There was a good 3ft weed growing out of it. They came and gave me the best quote out of the 3 I looked at. They came and went straight to work. Emptied about 7-5gal buckets of debris as well as some yard waste I already had and hauled it all away. They were clean and professional and great company. Would recommend to anyone."

"Chris came out and we discussed my landscaping needs for my new home.  I tried to convey my vision to Chris, I have a nice rustic style farmhouse that I just had built.  I also told him this wasn't the country club and I needed this work broken into pieces and would be looking to do basic landscaping, not grass that looks like carpet and more of a rustic type that would suit a farmhouse design like I have.  He started pushing this concrete bed borders, and I didn't like the look.  Not to mention, I'm sure it was quite expensive.  I tried to explain again, this wasn't a house in a subdivision in the city, it's a rural property and that would just look out of place.  One of the first things needed was some additional gravel on my parking area and making a turnaround and sidewalk to my back deck.  Chris quoted me $3800 to deliver and spread two truckloads of gravel.  That is a outrageous price!  I called and had a gravel company quote me a price and called a back hoe operator to get a price for spreading the gravel. The company's I contacted quoted me $700 a truck load for the material and $350 for the spreading.  Chris quoted double what the cost was for me to contract it myself.  I never heard back from him on any quote for the beds and planting.  Just as well, his prices were way out of line.  I think he saw my house and decided he could make a months salary off me.  I was very disappointed, he seemed like a nice guy.  I've since hired a part time man who is doing a fine job as I direct him.

And from the contractor's response, he should have let me know he didn't want to do a job on a rural property and that would have been fine.  My driveway is not unusual for a rural farm property.  The reason it was "swampy" was I had just moved in, construction trucks had been keeping it plowed up and we just were drying out from the worst rain season in 100 years in this area.  And now that the rain has dried out and the driveway has settled, anyone can get into my driveway with ANY kind of car or truck.  Funny thing, I had many dump trucks in spreading gravel, delivery trucks, and moving trucks and no one got stuck.  And I've never seen any quote from him other than a overpriced quote trying to make a killing off a small job.   I'm sure he didn't waste much of his time, I'm sure he wasted less of his than I did of mine."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

A solid driveway starts with the right asphalt mix, and for most homes, dense-graded hot mix asphalt (HMA) is the most recommended. It’s both durable and flexible, making it a reliable choice for residential use. A properly compacted 2-3 inch layer on a well-prepared crushed stone base will hold up for years. In areas with harsh winters or scorching summers, a slightly modified mix can help prevent cracking and rutting. No matter the climate, quality installation is just as important as the material itself, so hiring an experienced contractor ensures a smooth, long-lasting driveway built to last.

The decision to repair or replace your driveway depends on the extent of the damage. If your driveway has a few small cracks, a simple repair will do the trick. If you see larger cracks and potholes, it may be time to consider resurfacing or replacement. Resurfacing is a great option if more than 25% of the surface is damaged, but if the damage is extensive—deep cracks or significant sinking—it’s best to replace the driveway entirely. A new driveway, with proper care, can last decades while patching or resurfacing might only hold up for a few years before needing more attention.

When comparing installation costs, asphalt is often less expensive upfront than concrete. Asphalt prices typically range from $7 to $15 per square foot, while concrete can range from $3 to $18 per square foot. However, long-term costs should also be considered. Concrete driveways generally last longer (up to twice as long) and require less maintenance, which can make them more affordable over their lifespan. While asphalt has a lower installation cost and is easier to repair, it requires more frequent maintenance, such as sealing, which can add up over time. Therefore, while concrete is more expensive initially, its durability may offset the cost in the long run.

Three inches is a great thickness for a residential asphalt driveway that sees minimal to moderate traffic from cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks. However, a thicker driveway can better withstand the weight of a heavier vehicle, such as a trailer or a recreational vehicle. If you drive a heavy vehicle on a thin driveway, you risk cracking and damaging it.

Several materials are suitable for steep driveways. Gravel and crushed stone are affordable options that provide good traction. Permeable pavers—such as plastic, rubber, or concrete—filled with gravel or crushed stones are also excellent, as they allow water to drain without causing erosion and perform well in ice and snow. Another option is resin, which can be coated with an anti-slip finish and helps prevent puddles. For added stability, you can install a retaining wall to prevent pavers and gravel from shifting over time.
