"Prompt, professional and personable. Rob messaged me within minutes of my quote request, gave me a date within the same week, and was flexible when I asked him to reschedule. Impressive, but far more so when he came by. It was a small job but he treated it like the most important job of all- he prepped the area making sure my floor and furniture would be protected, he worked quickly, and because I happened to be working in the same area, he engaged me in pleasant conversation while working. Rob also offered me advice on the project I was working on and gave me supplies I would need to patch up the wall afterward. I highly recommend Rob and his team at RJL Insulation."

"Once the weather cooperated and the team was able to do the work, it was done very quickly and it all looks great! Vista sent in different people with different specialties for each piece of the job. The only thing that didn't come out quite as well as we would have liked was the drywall repair on the ceiling -- if we look closely, we can see the seam, but it wouldn't be noticeable to others. The same person who did the ceiling drywall did the drywall where the sliding doors were and the wall turned out beautifully. Also, the door did not shut correctly after initial installation, but Vista sent someone out -- without hesitation -- to repair it within two weeks and it works perfectly now. The team cleaned everything up as they went, so we only had very few nails and scrap materials to pick up.

We've already recommended Vista to neighbors and friends. The owner takes pride in the work his team does and it was clear in his follow-up to the job.

Drywall Insulation questions, answered by experts

Drywall can be toxic to the environment and to humans in some cases. As drywall breaks down in a landfill and comes in contact with other organic chemicals, it can create hydrogen sulfide gas or leach into the groundwater. Additionally, the CDC recommends methods for controlling the inhalation of drywall dust when handled. While the common ingredients of drywall—gypsum, silica, and mica—are naturally occurring, they can cause irritation in some humans.

There is no way to cut drywall without making dust, but you can reduce the amount of dust and especially the dangerous airborne particles by using manual cutting tools. Using a utility knife to score and snap your drywall will minimize dust production, and a jab saw for cutting cutouts for boxes and fixtures will generate almost no airborne dust. Even if you use these methods, you should still wear a respirator and safety goggles to avoid damage to your lungs and eyes.

Water-damaged drywall should almost always be replaced. Not only does it look bad, it’s a breeding ground for toxic mold. Even if you think the area is dry and there’s no active leak, the only way to be sure is to cut out the damaged area and see for yourself.

You may need to replace drywall because of smoke damage. If the drywall is covered in soot, you may be able to clean it, but it will require a lot of time and effort. You could spend hours cleaning the drywall only to find there is more damage and it needs to be replaced anyway. It’s usually easier and safer to remove the smoke-damaged drywall and replace it.

Both plaster and drywall are durable wall finishes, but they differ significantly in installation, cost, performance, and aesthetics.

Installation & Cost: Drywall installation is faster and more affordable, typically costing $1.50 to $3 per square foot. It uses premade sheets, making it a more accessible DIY project. Plastering is a labor-intensive craft that requires specialized skills, pushing costs to $2 to $10 per square foot. It involves applying a wet paste over a lath framework.

Durability & Performance: Plaster is generally more durable, longer-lasting, and provides superior soundproofing. It is also a better insulator, which can help reduce energy costs. Drywall is easier to remove for future renovations.

Aesthetics: Drywall provides a smooth, uniform surface ready for paint or texture. Plaster offers a high-end, naturally textured look that can hide imperfections and is often preferred for achieving a classic or historic aesthetic.

Which is better? The choice depends on your priorities. Drywall is ideal for those prioritizing a lower upfront cost, faster installation, and DIY potential. Plaster is the better option for a higher-end project where durability, soundproofing, and a unique, premium finish are more important than the initial cost.
