"I gutted my 1965 kitchen to the studs. J&M Plastering installed wallboard and skim coated my ceilings and walls. The results look like ice. Very smooth. The owner John was professional. I would recommend this Company."

"NE plastering restored my kitchen ceiling with a beautiful plaster ceiling. A pipe freeze destroyed the old ceiling, and I am extremely happy with Mr. Hernandez' work. There was further damage in the upstairs bath and now the new plaster walls are smooth and ready for paint and paper. I highly recommend this expert plasterer. Gérald Crôteau"

"I had Distinctive Painting paint to entire upstairs of my home. The job consist of all the ceilings, walls, trim, doors, baseboard and minor dry wall repair. Mario did a fantastic job on the trim, I was surprised he could paint that close to our hardwood floors and carpets without touching any of them. He correct all the cracks and repaired all screw holes in the drywall and the walls and ceiling looks great. The price was comparable to other quotes that I got. Overall my wife and I were very pleased with his work and will use again."

"I contacted various contractors on Angie's List and Home Advisor to have my water damaged bathroom ceiling replaced. Most were too busy or didn't even respond. I almost gave up until I contacted Steve and got an immediate response. Steve came quickly with his partner and looked at the job. He explained to me that he was finishing up with another job and then could start. He followed up sending me a written estimate along with a copy of his insurance (I didn't ask for it- I've never had a contractor volunteer his insurance info before). Although I got an email from another contractor, I already knew I wanted to go with Steve. Steve began on schedule and stayed with the job until he was finished. He was even sorry he couldn't come the Saturday after Thanksgiving because of plans with his family. He returned Monday and Tuesday as promised and finished the job. The work involved demolishing the ceiling, removing and replacing all the insulation, replacing the ceiling fan, installing new greenboard and finish. Steve perfectly matched the new drywall to the top of the existing walls. I couldn't be happier with his work. An added bonus is the care in keeping the area clean throughout. He placed drop cloths from the front door to the bathroom, cardboard on the tile floor, plastic on the bathroom walls and door to keep dust out. He finished each day by vacuuming the bathroom and the area of the rug he had walked on. Do not hesitate to hire Steve. He is very fussy about the perfection of his work, showing up on time, and communicating with you about the job from start to finish. Contractors like him are very rare these days. Thank you Steve."

"Steve was great. He fixed our ceiling that was botched by a previous contractor after removing 3 skylights. My only complaint is he was VERY expensive. $5,000 to redo our living room ceiling. This involved cutting out a large area of wallboard, cutting out some of the old skylight framing, installing furring strips, reinstalling wallboard, plastering, and painting. The end result was perfect though. He does great work."

"David was amazing to work with. He came quickly and provided reasonable estimate for the ceiling I needed repaired and painted. I spoke with him on Friday, he gave me an estimate on Saturday and started work first thing Monday morning. He finished on time and cleaned up when the work was completed. "Crew very professional, took proper precaution for containg mold spores during removal i.e., heavy, zippered plastic on kitchen doors, hepa scrubber fans running constantly day an night during process. Left cleaned are well prepared for contractors to put ceiling, lights, cabinets back up.

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

If your popcorn ceiling is asbestos-free and you are ready for a new look, painting is an option. As long as there is no flaking or other wear, a new coat of paint might be just the thing to refresh the old ceiling. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is to use either a paint sprayer or a thick roller to cover the popcorn texture fully. (Do not forget to dust it off beforehand!)

“Note that if you eventually want to remove the popcorn ceiling, a painted ceiling is a labor-intensive job to remove and will cost more,” says Bob Tschudi. “Once painted, the process of removing the popcorn ceiling requires physical scraping as opposed to a spray-and-scrape approach. It’s very labor-intensive, and thus more costly.”

The easiest way to remove texture from walls is the soak-and-scrape method. You’ll need to spray a section of the wall with water and let the water soak in and soften the texture. Then, you need to scrape the texture off using a drywall taping knife. This method works best with unpainted walls since paint prevents water from saturating the textured joint compound.

Yes, you can cover a popcorn ceiling, which is often more cost-effective and easier than scraping it off. Common methods include using ceiling-grade drywall, applying a skim coat, or installing beadboard panels to create a smooth, updated finish. Covering the ceiling can also protect you from asbestos exposure if the material contains it. However, it's important to note that this method only seals off the asbestos and does not eliminate it, which could be a concern for future renovations or home resale. If you suspect your ceiling contains asbestos, it's best to hire a local asbestos abatement company to test the material and manage its safe removal.

Older textures may contain asbestos, requiring careful handling and professional inspection before work begins to ensure safety compliance.

While you should consult with a ceiling professional for larger cracks, especially if you’re not sure what’s causing your ceiling to crack, you can certainly try to repair small cracks on your own. If you’re up for the task, here’s how to repair ceiling cracks for $150 or less.
