However, I had a mason out for some other work on the chimney. When he did a full inspection he said the cleaning had only gone 'half-way' up and that they didn't do a complete job. I trust the mason more, because he did some significant jobs for multiple friends. Also, I was asking the crew leader for a quote for chimney caps. He said they could do it, but that they would definitely need a lift because of the height. And that a lift would probably cost $1000 or more (that didn't include the cost of installing the chimney cap either). Not sure if he was just trying to discourage me from choosing them for the work, but the conversation felt a little 'slick' to me. Anyway, the mason quoted me $400 for each and would go up on the roof without a lift. So clearly I didn't need to spend over $2000 to get the caps done. So in short, this is 'you get what your pay for.' If you have small house, it's probably perfect. But for me, they short-cut the job which is a disappointment."
