"Had a huge tree fall during a storm, breaking thru fence into neighbor's yard. Will and his crew did a great job of removing the tree and some additional cutting of other overgrown trees in the backyard. Special shout to Richard, who came back to do additional work I requested. Very pleased overall with their service. Will use again for sure."

"I hired Hive Mind Enterprises/HME Tree Fellers to remove twenty-three pine trees planted by my father many years ago. The job was much bigger than my brother or I estimated, both in the height of the trees and the width of the trees. HME Tree Fellers were open, honest, and good-natured about this mistake, and worked hard to accommodate not only me, but also my 91 year old mother who also lives on the property. They worked professionally and quickly, getting what should have been a much longer job done in much less time than I expected."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Trees that flower in the spring—like dogwood, cherry, magnolia, and pear—should not be pruned during the winter. These spring-flowering plants grow buds on old growth, so you’ll actually remove what would’ve been gorgeous flowering foliage. Instead, wait to prune until right after they bloom, when the flowers fade.

Early signs that a tree is struggling include premature leaf shedding and lesions or other strange markings. Peeling bark, dead or rotten branches on the ground, and a conspicuous lack of leaves can all be signs that a tree has started to die. By the time a tree starts leaning, it’s usually too far gone to save.

A standard tree removal doesn’t include stump grinding. If you want your contractor to remove your tree and grind the stump, you must pay an extra charge. That said, you’ll likely save on the cost of stand-alone service—especially if it’s a small tree and they can finish both jobs in a single trip.

The best way is to start controlling tree height long before it grows too large, via careful pruning through the years. But that’s not always possible. If a tree has become too high or too large, use selective pruning to remove the most troublesome branches, one by one, without topping the tree. Gently shaping a tree like this can, over time, correct problems. You can also find growth inhibitors to spray on a tree to stop it from growing too rapidly, but use these sparingly if at all.

Stump grinding consists of removing the visible part of the stump, but the roots remain intact. Depending on the tree and root system, the roots may still grow after stump grinding. If you are concerned about root growth and damage, you may want to consider having a stump removed completely.
