Small jobs welcome

"Brian installed a dedicated circuit in our basement. Brian answered the first time I called. He set up a time to come and review the job. On the day he came, he called to make sure I was at home. He gave me a reasonable price for the job and agreed to do the work the following week. He came exactly when he said he would and performed the work in the time frame he specified. I am extremely pleased with Brian's work and would highly recommend him to anyone who is in need of electrical work."

"They were very helpful and professional. The price to install my entryway chandelier was reasonable. I purchased the wrong bulbs and they came back and put them in at no charge. Very friendly and helpful person managing my phone calls, too."

"This contractor is amazing! He came over and realized that what I needed wasn't something that needed to be scheduled. He was great at listening and suggesting alternatives. When it was said and done, I had a new, safer way to power a new heat pump dryer along with a couple other lines ran for future work that we discussed."

"I hired Jason to install a simple ceiling trim as well as to install a new lighting fixture on a 20-foot ceiling. What I really liked about Jason is that he executed the work and did not cause any damage elsewhere. He built scaffolding, which is heavy, to install the light on my relatively new Maple floors and there was not a scratch. My consistent problem with most contractors is that although they can usually do the work, they cause things like floor scratches or marks or dents in the walls... there is usually some residual damage to having a project done. Jason executed the scope of work without a single additional flaw. His price was also reasonable overall. At one point I asked him to also install a new outlet to support the new Chandelier. He did it without hesitation or an upcharge. I know most contractors would have charged an additional 15 or $20 for that. I would hire him again"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.

You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.

To reduce AC startup power for a whole-house generator, install a soft start kit or hard start capacitor, which lowers the initial surge by gradually ramping up the compressor. Using a smart load manager can also help by staggering startup loads, preventing a system overload and future costly repairs.

If you’re deciding between a solar battery versus a generator for the best backup power solution, you can take a few factors into consideration. Solar batteries are quiet while generators can be quite loud. Generators have a lower up-front cost, but they require fuel and ongoing maintenance while solar batteries are more expensive but don’t have many ongoing costs.

Natural gas generators are designed to run for extended periods of time, such as power outages during a natural disaster. Since there’s no limit to the supply of natural gas, they don’t need to stop for refills. However, generators do need maintenance, including pauses to check and add oil. Constantly running them will also cause a lot more wear and tear, leading to a shorter lifespan.
