What the two electricians did well: They installed the basement outlet in the basement and wall switch with no trouble. Though I expected the bathroom ceiling fixture would need replaced, it turned out I had used two bad light bulbs to test it. It was working fine. The employees could have told me it needed replaced and I would never have known better, but thankfully they didn't.
But much more was downright poor customer service:
1) The employees didn't use drop cloths, and left without cleaning up their messes. In the bedroom I had to vacuum a substantial amount of plaster from all over the carpet, and wash a bedspread. In the basement I had to vacuum up shavings they left behind including what lay on an amplifier, TV, and DVD player I use when working out. When I questioned it, the boss told me not cleaning up by these employees had happened before, which I presumed meant several times. Turns out it was only once before; and yet he even though he said he yelled at them, he said he "wouldn't fire good electricians just because they're messy." Messiness wasn't the my point, it was the not cleaning up. I told him that I felt part of being a good electrician was cleaning up any mess you make.
2) After the ceiling fan was installed, I pointed out it was making noise Hunter fans aren't the least bit noted for. Both electricians told me that some ceiling fans don't run silently, especially newer models, and both of them had ceiling fans in their homes that didn't run silentl. They suggested I buy a balance kit at a hardware store to see if that might help. A balance kit was included with the fan, but they didn't even try to apply it or let me know it was there, instead telling me to go buy one.
3) They took the fan box with them, including the balance kit mentioned above, as well as any directions, paperwork, and warranty information. I did get the box and stuff back, but only after I complained.
4) I called Hunter about the noise. The representative who took my call had me rotate the blades with no power going to the fan. The noise persisted, which to her suggested that the motor was about to fail. She reported that the model fan that was installed was just as quiet as any other Hunter fan, contrary to what the Woodhyrst employees told me.
5) I was charged $65 for "materials," yet the receipt I asked for showed the employees had spent $46.58. When I questioned the costs, the supervisor/boss told me it included materials "on the truck," and that there was "a 10% markup when employees have to go to the store to get materials." The materials from the truck were not listed, and the I was not apprised of the 10% markup fee until after I complained about the discrepancy.
6) The employees purchased 25 feet of NMW/G wire at $24.99, used less than 8 feet of it, then took the remainder away with them even though I was the one who paid for it. When I questioned it, I learned they'd reported there was only "an arm's length left over." There was at least 17 feet left.
7) The supervisor did offer me a refund, which I declined. I wasn't looking to be placated financially. Worse, in the middle of my trying to explain where I felt wronged, he laughed at me. He actually laughed at me. So I requested a refund for the hidden/undefined costs and a pro-rated amount for the leftover wire that was removed from my house without my permission. I requested a check for $35, which he agreed to. Over a week has passed and I still don't have it, and don't expect to get it anytime soon.
8) This may not be important, but the invoice was dated 6/23 instead of the actual date of work, 6/24.
I can in no way recommend this company.
"I believe you have the wrong company. We have never done this type of work. We install generator systems. I am sorry you had a bad experience with whoever that company was though."
Did excellent job with install and explanation of how it works. Quickly responded to a service call
Only issue was some delay in getting install scheduled due to weather and busy schedule
- 1. Sales person came to the home and quoted. Scheduled install
- 2. Install happened within the expected window even given hurricane Sandy hit the East coast and took the electrical transfer box we needed from Woodhyrst's supplier. Woodhyrts obtained the transfer box in another creative method for my install.
- 3. Tech's came on time; left on time; no surprises
- 4. Follow up call to install my indoor monitoring system for the generator. Tech's were on time; did a proper job; again, no surprises.
- 5. I paid the quoted price in full
- 6. End of story.
