"I would recommend LA's Quality Tree Service to anyone who wants a professional tree service After the blow of high winds left our yard with one 80 foot tree uprooted and crashing down on two other smaller trees and numerous other tree damage. Luis came out with in an hour after calling his company. Gave a very fair price. The crew came out the next day and started the clean up. They were on time every morning and worked two full days. Cutting down six trees (25' to 80') Lots of downed branches (some 25' long and about 18" thick) and grinded the tree stump. The whole crew was professional, cleaned up every evening. Thankful we found LA's Quality Tree Service."

"I am very pleased with Flynn. Except for a scheduling miscommunication (they came earlier than expected), I can offer my utmost recommendation. The team was polite and friendly. They were respectful of property. They were efficient and skillful. They cleaned up after the job and I am very pleased with the result. It exceeded my expectations."

"Excellent work grinding a large maple tree stump, the main project. Made suggestions for and took care of grinding a smaller stump and roots of a willow tree that was cut down several years ago. Also made recommendations for the treatment and planting of a sloped area where the maple tree was. Will definitely hire again. Prompt, efficient and courteous."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

It takes anywhere from three to seven years for a stump to decompose on its own. This timeframe can depend on the kind of tree and your climate. The lower to the ground the stump is, the faster it rots. If you kill a tree stump with salt, boiling water, herbicide, light deprivation, or burning, the tree stump decomposes faster.

If a disease has attacked and destroyed the roots, then the tree may fall over as soon as it has died or while part of it is still alive. Trees that die with their roots left in place tend to stay standing for much longer, but those roots will decay eventually, allowing gravity to do the rest.

Trees don’t usually grow back after being cut down. Some particularly robust tree species may start sending up new stems from a stump to recover, but those stems won’t become a “tree” like before. Generally, trees don’t recover from being entirely cut down, which is why it’s important to be careful when making a decision. When you cut down a tree, it’s a good idea to make plans to remove the stump, even if it’s unlikely to grow back.

You should avoid cutting off the top of mature cherry trees. This process is called tree topping, and it’s not recommended for cherry trees—or any trees, for that matter. Tree topping removes between one-third to half of the length of the tree trunk, resulting in structurally unsound, fruitless suckers. The only exception is for saplings. Young pie, sour, and tart cherry trees that are over 30 inches tall in the fall or winter before the tree blooms can benefit from heading cuts.

Salt, herbicide, light deprivation, boiling water, and burning can all help dissolve a tree stump. You can also bury the tree stump in soil or mulch to help it rot naturally. Killing a tree stump prevents future regrowth, but you may also remove it by digging it out or grinding it.
