It is certainly worth it if you seek to extend the life of wall-to-wall carpeting, though it depends on the individual and the carpet itself. If the carpet looks fine, it likely is fine. Generally speaking, restretch your carpets once every five years, though this timeframe depends on a number of factors, such as the level of foot traffic in the area. Most transition strips measure two to five inches wide, but it varies by floor type. The right gap for your flooring depends on the look you prefer. A wider gap allows more room for expansion, whereas a narrower gap requires a smaller transition strip but leaves less expansion room. You should have at least a one-inch gap between any floor types, but sometimes more.

Stretching a carpet should be a one-time job. If by re-stretching you mean doing it a second (or third) time, it’s probably better to replace it altogether. Most carpets are expected to last anywhere from five to 15 years, so if it’s past that timeframe, you may want to shop around for a new one.

Standard padding works like a sponge. It absorbs liquid, soaking up every drop of moisture that hits it. Moisture barrier padding does the opposite because it has a waterproof coating made of plastic film, rubber, or treated foam. It doesn’t absorb spills and keeps them on the surface instead, so you can clean them up before they damage your subfloor.
